My educational background includes study at Houghton College, Houghton, New York, where I received a BA in Elementary Education/Spanish K-9. I have also taken Special Education and Middle Grades graduate classes at Liberty University and North Carolina State University (NCSU).

My experience in teaching spans a wide area. I have taught elementary grades in New Jersey and Chicago. Then we moved overseas and I taught English supplemental classes to English-speaking children who attended a Dutch school. And, I also home-schooled my own five children. While overseas, I founded and directed a small English educational resource center to help expatriate families with educational needs. There, I worked with students from a variety of nationalities: Swiss, Swedish, British, South African, Slovak, Dutch and others. We also had a number of special education situations, so I am very familiar with individualizing educational plans for particular student needs. I have taught students from kindergarten through high school. I also worked locally with students in ESL. Now back in the States, I have substitute taught for two school districts in Western New York, especially the elementary age (but I also worked with junior and senior high) and the special education department. Transferred to Cary for my husband's job, I am working with children of a variety of ages, providing educational support in a variety of subject areas, as needed. In addition, I teach ESL daily, both locally to children and adults, as well as online to children one-on-one in China. I have been doing this for the past five years.

One of my stronger points is being able to "see" where the student is and to pinpoint his/her difficulty. Then I am able to plan a strategy to address that specific area. I particularly enjoy working one-on-one and with small groups. I help them learn how to learn, and hopefully, help them see how they ARE able to progress and have success on their own. I love learning, and like to share that love with students. I believe that lea

After raising my own children internationally on several continents over 25 years, I understand, firsthand, what it means to learn a new language; I have worked at it myself, as well as with my children. Starting while living internationally and continuing now, back in the USA, I teach children and adults, both globally and locally, to communicate in English. I do this almost every day.

My bachelor training is specifically in the area of elementary education so I have had many hours of both training and experience with elementary students. In addition, I have taught in a variety of these grades over the years--both primary and upper elementary. If I have not specifically had a position in one of these grades, I have certainly substitute taught in them. In addition, I home-schooled my own five children for most of their years overseas, all of whom have either graduated from college or are presently attending. Interestingly, two of them are in the education field and three are headed or already working in the medical field. They all continue to have a love for learning and are avid readers.

I'm a credentialed teacher who home schooled my five children for almost all of their pre-college years, and very successfully. We lived internationally and did not have a homeschool support group. For the high school years, I enlisted an online school for several subjects for a couple of my children. All went on to receive academic scholarships and excel in college. Eventually, I founded and directed an international English educational resource center to aid expatriates with the needs of their children, supplying teachers and courses for K-12, chosen as needed. I taught children from Swedish, South African, Slovak, Dutch, and American families, to name a few.

Reading

Reading is wonderful, and builds imagination! However, there can be no pleasure in reading when there is a lack of comprehension. I enjoy working with students to help them "connect the dots" and see the words on the page come to life in new ways. I have worked with all types of students and all ages--beginning, elementary readers and those struggling. For example, I worked with an 11th grader, who was reading at a 3rd grade reading level, to help her learn new skills that made reading become enjoyable. She was able to jump ahead by grades, enroll in college and attend successfully.

We love Roberta, especially mom!

My 1st grade twins use to lack confidence in their abilities and really struggle with their schoolwork with lots of tears and frustration. But since Roberta has started with them, the tears and frustration are gone! They actually look forward to her coming over. Roberta makes the learning fun for them and is very patient and warm. She determined where my twins need the help and always comes with a plan in mind each session. She is constantly reviewing and reinforcing the information without them even knowing it. She has great suggestions and feedback for my questions as well. I highly recommend Roberta!

Knowledgeable and truly patient tutor.

Exceptional to grasping what’s the student needs and using knowledge to recognize what is necessary to move forward. Comprehension to assist that individual requires.

Compassionate and knowledgeable teacher.

My daughter describes Ms. Roberta as a very smart and kind teacher. She is able to connect with my daughter by incorporating her interests into their lessons which make it very fun for my daughter. As a parent, I like that she is very observant with the strengths and weaknesses of my daughter. She is able to asses closely what my daughter needs help with and makes sure that each session is catered to her specific needs. She always has an open line of communication which makes it easy for the both of us to collaborate on my daughter's needs and progress. Most importantly, my daughter looks forward to every session with her in which I am very pleased about. We are thankful for her compassionate ways and are very lucky to have found such a kind and professional tutor in Ms. Roberta.

Exceptional Compentenciespersonal interactive, building trust and comfort, assessments on point, providess with with ,res,, lcrceeptional

In my view and experience, Roberta is a compassionate, comprehensive, holistic teacher, counselor, and or administrator (she wears many hats and effectively adjusts as well). She provided warm, engaging verbal teaching directives during all interactions with my step-daughter. She listened to my input and I welcomed her suggestions. She provided resources and learning tools to support the teaching efforts in the home. Progress was accomplished and I am ever grateful. Whenever, I have a need in the future for tutor services Roberta is my go to person. Thanks Roberta.

Wonderful cursive teacher

Roberta has been teaching my daughter cursive for three months.  My daughter loves it and has come a long way quickly. Roberta is friendly, fun, patient and engaging, and is very adept at virtual teaching.   My daughter can be distractible, but Roberta keeps her focused.  I'm so glad we found Roberta and would highly recommend her.

patient and dedicated

Roberta has done wonders with my girls. They are in grades 1 and 3 with very different personalities. Somehow Roberta is able to tap into the best mode of learning for each one. She is patient and strategizes for the most effective and productive way to teach my girls. She is beyond an asset.

Highly recommended

My son is in 5th grade and was in need of a tutor to help him with reading comprehension. I enlisted the help of Mrs. Roberta and I couldn’t be happier with how things are going. My son looks forward to the individual time and attention he receives each week during his sessions. I have been impressed with Roberta’s ability to assess my sons needs, pin point a plan and work thoroughly with him through his needs. While there’s a long road ahead to improve competency, I am so glad that we have her as a resource. I would highly recommend her skill sets along with her professionalism. She’s a great educator!
