A former professor of literature and writing and a published author, I have have been honored to win Excellence in Teaching awards at two universities. I am very passionate about what I do and approach all of my teaching and tutoring with my trademark enthusiasm and humor. Although I have the expertise and experience that comes with a PhD, I can promise you I am no stuffy academic and will never make you sit through boring lectures or tedious drills. I believe people learn best when they are engaged, when they are lit up and having fun, and when they can see how the subject matter applies to their own lives, and why it matters.

I began tutoring as a graduate student, working as a Writing Center tutor at my university, and also for private tutoring companies, helping students with everything from improving their vocabulary for the SAT, to tackling ESL concerns, to penning the most compelling college essays. During my doctoral studies, I became the Assistant Director of University Writing at Brandeis University, and continued to work with private individuals in test prep, literature, history, art history, and writing. As a professor, I taught a wide variety of classes, including honors classes and so-called "lab" classes for those in need of extra help, in literature (particularly American literature), expository and creative writing, and philosophy and the arts. I also continued to work one-on-one with many students on independent study and capstone projects. All of this occurred at a business university, where my students typically reported they had neither interest nor aptitude in writing, literature, or the arts and humanities more broadly. This fact did not deter or discourage me, because of my fundamental belief that with enough enthusiasm and knowledge I can show any student the beauty and power of words, and the skills and strategies to wield that power effectively. I can do the same for you or your child.

Fantastic tutor

Jennifer helped my high schooler gain an understanding of complex literary concepts in a highly effective way. I would recommend Jennifer in highest terms for any student needing extra guidance on writing and/or literature.

Very pleasant, patient and knowledgeable tutor

Jennifer came to our home to work with my homeschooled daughter. She understood exactly what we needed to work on after reviewing my daughter's writing and the teacher's comments (online writing class). She explained the concept of writing commentary in easy-to-understand terms using examples from books my daughter had read and offered to bring her exercises to work with for her next session. She was very pleasant, patient and fun and we both loved her. My daughter is looking forward to her next lesson and we plan to ask for Jennifer's help as needed throughout the year.

Outstanding

Jennifer was simply a breath of fresh air for my daughter. In two hours she gave her the tools she needed to go and accomplish what she needed to accomplish. My daughter said she was very knowledgeable, easy to understand and patient. My daughter said " I don't know what it cost but it was worth every penny" So I personally want to say thank you Jennifer

Outsdanding help with college essay

Jennifer was truly outstanding in helping my daughter with her college essay. She promptly gave excellent feedback and helped guide her on how to better express her ideas and feelings and hence make her essay standout. Notably, she gave various options and examples on how one could better express each section, allowing my daughter to understand the process and then work to improve the essay (while keeping her own voice). The useful prompts helped her get over sections where she was stuck and better personalize her essay. Could not have hoped for better.

Engaging tutor, quick focus on practical tips for SAT

Jennifer was engaged to help a high school senior with SAT test prep, particularly for the verbal portion. The tutor requested a drive to a location nearer her and although somewhat inconvenient, we found it well worth the drive. The hourly rate, while tending to the higher side of the pay scale, we also found worth it. The tutor session conveyed extremely helpful instruction from start to finish. The tutor had the right blend of enthusiasm, encouragement and instruction. I particularly appreciated that she dove immediately into the heart of the material and wasted little time with non-essentials. She tailored the session to our needs and we would appreciate the chance to work with her again.
