About Heather

Bio

I am a teaching artist with a varied professional skillset and hold a Botanical Illustration certificate (Cornell University, February 2024) and a Masters in Education: Humanities (Grand Canyon University, March 2024, pending). I work as a 7-12 Art teacher, and have experience as a community college instructor. When I'm not teaching, I spend much of my time hiking and exploring wilderness areas of my region, which is my primary source of artistic inspiration and 'happy place.'

I work as a 7-12 Art teacher, and have experience as a community college instructor. When I'm not teaching, I spend much of my time hiking and exploring wilderness areas of my region, which is my primary source of artistic inspiration and 'happy place.'

My teaching philosophy is to help students connect with their creativity, and to foster confidence through practical skill development so students can reach their goals for advancement. As a Humanities educator, I feel learning happens best when it is organic and student-driven.

I have managed and run my own small business as an artist for the last 6 years, and hold a Botanical Illustration certificate through Cornell University (February 2024). I have had my drawings on display at the Columbia County Rural Library District, Columbia County Health System, and the Liberty Theater (Dayton, WA). I have a certificate in Foundations of Art Ministry (May 2023) where my emphasis was on journal/sketchbook development and have taken courses from artist Liz Steel (sketchbook design), and John Muir Laws (journal sketching).

I was mentored in painting techniques by Western landscape artist Loraine W. Carbury-Noakes, and have managed and run my own small business as an artist for the last 6 years specializing in watercolor, ink, and gouache. I hold a Botanical Illustration certificate program through Cornell University (February 2024). I have had my paintings on display at the Columbia County Rural Library District (Dayton, WA), Columbia County Health System, the Liberty Theater, the Pendleton Center for Arts, Combine Art Collective (Walla Walla, WA), and most recently, the Maryhill Museum of Art (Teachers as Artists exhibit).
