My name is Sam, and I've tutored math for over 7 years with students of all ages and levels, both at a tutoring franchise and privately, with 1-4 students at a time. I graduated magna cum laude (3.725 GPA) from RCNJ with a BS in Mathematics. I received a 690 on the math section of the SAT, 29 on the math portion of the ACT, and a perfect score on the math portion of the General GRE.

I started college as a music major, but knew then that I had a knack for math; in my first semester I was helping a friend with a problem set from one of her math classes. She said my explanation was far clearer than the professor's, and she wondered why I wasn't pursuing a math route and I could only say that I didn't know. The next day I switched my major to mathematics and have not looked back! Since then, I have been a math tutor and I have seen my knowledge and ability to tie topics together enlarge tremendously while teaching in parallel with completing my degree. I live for the moment when a student finally understands something that they felt left behind on in class; removing that stress while making the topics intellectually interesting is its own reward.

I am an outstanding tutor because of my breadth of knowledge and ability to engage others so they come away more interested in learning math. I have taught counting and arithmetic up through college level calculus courses, and have helped many prepare for the SAT and ACT. My method uses crucial elements of math education that are missing in schools: a sense of connectivity between lessons and practical reasons for learning the material. These ensure a broader understanding of the material and bolster the students' curiosity and desire to learn. I encourage them not to be shy about asking any questions or to say "I don't know," while also providing a context for learning new information within their previous knowledge. In other words, I help them see how it all fits together!
