Bio

I have been in the field of special education since 2000. Throughout the years I have worked as a special education teacher and teacher of the visually impaired (TVI). I have also worked as a music therapist, vision rehabilitation teacher, and as a tutor specializing in the Wilson Reading Program. I have been in the field of special education since 2000. Throughout the years I have worked as a special education teacher and teacher of the visually impaired (TVI). I have also worked as a music therapist, vision rehabilitation teacher, and as a tutor specializing in the Wilson Reading Program. I currently work full time as a TVI and am an adjunct professor online for graduate coursework pertaining to students with visual impairments. Teaching is a passion for me and I work to instill a love of learning in all the students with whom I teach with as we work together to reach their fullest potential. This includes individuals without a disability, a learning disability, developmental disability, multiple disabilities, a sensory impairment among an age range spanning from birth into adulthood.

One aspect I love about tutoring and working as a TVI is that I work one-on-one with students. By working one-on-one with a student, I am able to better assess his/her strengths/weaknesses and tailor his/her instruction to address him/her. Individualized instruction that takes into account the interests of students can be very powerful. The reward for teaching is watching a student grow and succeed.

I am certified as a level I instructor in the Wilson Reading Program and have successfully tutored students who have struggled with reading using the program over the years. I have over 20 years of experience tutoring students in the Wilson Reading Program. I am also skilled in teaching braille, the abacus, and various types of access technology.

The majority of the students with whom I have worked and provided services to have either been in elementary school or middle school and/or function developmentally at an elementary age. The adults I have tutored have not had any disabilities. Since most of my students have been within the elementary/middle school age range, I have the most experience in understanding the curriculum expectations for students between K-8th grade.

In addition to the Wilson Reading Program, I have also used other methods to phonological instruction, including onsets and rimes, syllabication, etc. I find that a multi-sensory approach often works best in teaching students who struggle with phonics. I have taught phonics in small group instruction as a special education teacher in public schools and through individual instruction in the following capacities: Sylvan Learning Center Instructor, when teaching braille to students who are visually impaired, tutoring the Wilson Reading Program for a private tutoring agency and as an independent contractor.

Throughout the years I have worked with students as a consultant special education teacher working directly with students with ADD/ADHD or provided individualized instruction to a students with a blind/visual impairment that also has had a diagnosis if ADD/ADHD. The experiences I have had and the certifications I hold have provided me with the skills necessary to work successfully with students with ADD/ADHD.

I have found a multi-sensory approach is typically effective in teaching students with dyslexia how to read and writing to students with dysgraphia. I also hold certification as a Level I Instructor in the Wilson Reading Program. Research has shown that the Wilson Reading Program is effective in teaching students with dyslexia phonological skills that are essential to learning to read.

Amy was great. She was obviously very knowledgeable and experienced, and explained everything about her assessment clearly. Our 7 year old son took to her immediately and says he had fun even though they were doing "school" stuff. Thank you for the help - highly recommend!
