Math problems -- I can help! In any level of math, I aim to energize students and prove that math is not that difficult, building confidence and an "I can do this attitude!".

Professionally, I have been an educator for 30 years and have taught all mathematics classes from the 7th grade basic and pre-algebra classes through 11th grade Algebra 2. I have also taught math classes for local community colleges. My career, except for five years as a school administrator, is about evenly split between middle and high school math classes, along with with some science. Geometry and algebra are my favorite classes and I especially enjoy lessons that bring forth concepts from both simultaneously. I have been recognized for higher than average student achievement and was twice named a Cumberland County Schools Model Classroom Teacher, in addition to having earned National Board certification in mathematics.

I am willing to tutor one student or small groups (up to three). Sometimes, kids place a stigma on needing to receive extra help, but are more willing to attend when a good friend or friends come along. Then we have some really great math taking place using the synergy of a small group all disguised as a social endeavor. Naturally, whether one or more students are involved, lessons or assistance is customized to the needs of the students.

Sessions with me can be a review or explanation of homework assignments, analysis and remediation of concepts poorly tested, or skill building. Very often I observe and inform parents that the key reasons for poor math performance is weakness in underlying skills, so we can spend time reinforcing those skills, finding relationships between topics, and learn how math really is sequential and builds upon itself.

I look forward to rewarding sessions with any child that wishes to work in middle grades math, algebra, and geometry. For those who are trying to improve SAT or ACT scores for college admission, I can design and implement a beneficial program there as well.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I am completely familiar with the elementary math, and can provide guidance to students who are struggling to put the mathematical pieces together. I can provide guidance in honing the basic skills, emphasis on vocabulary, methods and strategies for problem solving, and the algorithms used in elementary computations. I can also provide insight to patterns and relationships of math topics to each other.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Over 25 years, I have taught algebra at all academic levels, and am familiar with the evolution of algebra instruction from simple computations to application. I stress the development of basic skills and I often tell students and parents that learning algebra is much easier with a command of the "little" things, such as underlying properties, evaluation of answers and processes to the standard of reasonableness, etc. I believe that properly guided, students can be successful or even master algebra.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry was mastered by early Greeks and Egyptians centuries ago, but is still problematic for today's students. With an underlying foundation of algebra, geometry then expands to concepts, postulates, theorems, and relationships involving lines, plane or solid shapes, etc. I have taught geometry to middle grades and high school students, including honors geometry. I enjoy eliciting from students the thinking involved in solving geometric problems, and can provide insight into relationships between topics or multiple strategies for solving them.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have taught pre-algebra for years, and furthermore, understand why each pre-algebra topic is important in high school algebra. I can help students make the connections, and see relationship and patterns in each topic. I have taught mathematics for 25 years at all levels.
SAT Math

SAT Math

Both the ACT and SAT are used by colleges and universities as one of many factors when a student is being considered for admission. Therefore, they should not be taken lightly and a preparation regimen can help in elevating scores. I have assisted many students with college entrance exams, and can offer insight into the key components of the test to include commonly tested items and concepts. With students I review test-taking strategies as well as expand or help reinforce the algebra or geometry skills needed to solve problems.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

With the motivated student that wishes to complete several preparation lessons, I can assist with a regimen that can help in elevating scores. I have assisted many students with college entrance exams, and can offer insight into the key components of the test to include commonly tested items and concepts. Test-taking strategies are discussed, basic foundational algebra and geometry skills reinforced. I will focus on plane and solid geometry, linear algebra, functions, and certainly the algebra of geometry. I often suggest or provide supplemental materials for students to complete outside of the tutoring session, discussing and re-teaching difficult concepts.

Middle School Math/Algebra 1

Louis has been helping both of my nephews get back up to speed after a lost year of school during Covid-19. He has been engaging, patient and both boys have made noticeable progress. Louis even put together a list of worksheets and supplemental materials for the boys to review online during days when they don’t have sessions with Louis. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Knowledgeable, Understandable, Available

Louis was available to us, not once, but twice today on very short notice. He took the time to go over what my son was having trouble understanding and explained it to him multiple ways. He is a great teacher. My student and I both really enjoyed everything he provided for us today. We will absolutely be using him again. Thank you Louis!!

Knowledgeable, patient, and responsive tutor.

Louis did a really great job in an emergency night-before-the-test situation. He picked up the session with no notice whatsoever and and he was up-to-speed on a wide variety of high school Algebra II quadratic-related topics. Extremely helpful and very much appreciated.
