Why I tutor

As long as I can remember, I've been helping students in school. I've spent much of my life as an academic coach -- from correcting my younger brother's algebra homework to editing college essays for high school students--because I enjoy it. Students ask me back because I bring enthusiasm, hard work, and personalized attention to each lesson.

What I teach

I specialize in coaching subjects at the high school and college levels, specifically Math (from Algebra I to Differential Equations) and English (from the basics all the way to AP English coaching/college essay coaching). I personalize each lesson, assign reasonable homework between sessions, and track progress every month.

I love teaching programming and specialize in C, C++, and R. I'm currently working as a software developer.

Math Tutoring

My strongest attribute as a math tutor is that I wasn't always particularly interested or good at math. In fact, what pushed me to pursue math in college and graduate school was having a high school teacher who took time out of her day to discover what I needed to succeed.

Similarly, I find for many of my students their struggle with mathematics isn't their discipline, ability, or desire to learn -- it's how they're being taught. I recognize that every student will have specific needs, that each lesson needs to be slightly altered, and that the approach to mathematical understanding will depend heavily on the student.

Customer Satisfaction

I appreciate the potentially huge impact that an academic coach can have on a student. As such, I value honest feedback and earnest input from my students and their parents. Never hesitate to communicate concerns or ask for specialized help.

Schedule & Availability

I am fairly flexible with my schedule but because I do my best to tailor lessons to each student, I prefer at least 12 hours of notice before a cancelled appointment.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Help with my toughest semester yet

I am a junior in college studying computer science and I was taking a 400 level CS course that I really struggled with. I had sessions with Jonathan mostly every week, sometimes even twice a week and he is the only reason I passed this class. He helped break down assignments, explain confusing concepts, helped teach me how to debug effectively and get me started on different sections of the code. He was always very encouraging even when I was very hard on myself. I would recommend him to anyone!

Excellent tutor

Jonathan is a knowledgeable, understanding and patient tutor. He is very qualified in tutoring C++. He helps with my son's college class assignments, grasps what he needs to catch up on and directs him to get to the goal. Very patient and reliable. My son is learning a lot with Jonathan.

Lesson #1

For our first lesson, Jonathan helped me understand and complete my assignment for class. I learned a lot from this session, and I can't wait to meet next week. Thank you!!!

Knowledgeable tutor with a knack for explaining things plainly

Jonathan was able to explain my son's statistics in a manner that allowed him to begin to catch up in a class that he has fallen behind in and finish assignments that he'd been unable to complete due to lack of understanding.

Very knowledgeable, adaptable, patient, and an amazing tutor!

Jonathan A is very good at explaining concepts. He has a vast knowledge of computer science coding, terms, and concepts. He adapts to my learning style very easily (it switches depending on the purpose of the tutoring session): explaining the coding problems, explaining programming assignment requirements, assisting me with debugging an existing program, or studying for an exam, Jonathan A. knows a lot. When he does not (which is only once), he is very open about it, does not waste my time and money, and thoroughly researches the topic and gets back to me the next session to explain the topic. He is also very good at communicating, and scheduling. He is just overall very amazing! I will definitely keep using him as a tutor!

Very personable and knowledgable

I have worked with Jonathan quite a few times, he is one of the most thoughtful tutors I have had. He is available on short notice and has helped me tremendously throughout my Data Structures classes.
