Nicholas J. P, M.S., is a researcher, programmer, and biomedical engineer with a penchant for quantitative, cross-disciplinary inquiry. Nicholas is currently a second-year medical student at the Jacobs School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where his research interests include neuroradiology, and the neural substrates of consciousness.

Prior to entering Jacobs, Nicholas earned an M.S. in Bioethics and a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and from Columbia University, where his senior thesis, the development of an Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy Laser Alignment Aid, earned the bioengineering program’s Award for Most Outstanding Verification testing, an honor given to the thesis that demonstrates the most convincing evidence of the project’s efficacy.

At Columbia, Nicholas developed a laser guidance system to improve the accuracy of ultrasound-guided biopsy and other minimally invasive procedures. As an Undergraduate Researcher at the University’s Memory and Navigation Laboratory, he developed software to compare memory tasks in virtual reality and 3D environments. As a Research Assistant at the Biophotonics Optical Radiology Laboratory, Nick created a graphical model for an ultrasound-guided biopsy aid to improve accuracy and reduce patient discomfort in biopsy procedures.

Nick also holds B.S. degrees in both Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Fordham University, where he led a team of peers in the development of software enabling multi-robot navigation for safe building exploration, the product of which was presented at the International 2015 SPIE Electronic Imaging Conference.

Nick’s work has been published in Intelligent Robots and Computer Vision XXXII: Algorithms and Techniques and The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal. He is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology and recently contributed to a paper in CVIR Endovascular entitled Use of a sterrable microcatheter during superselective angiorphy: impact on prceural efficiency.
