Grammar,

Grammar

As a former high school English teacher, I have studied and taught grammar for years. I am familiar with all the grammar concepts that students need to write and communicate clearly. I majored in English at UC Berkeley and have a M.A.T. from Harvard University. I teach grammar by reviewing rules and then putting them into practice with lots of exercises and practical application through the student's writing.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have a very sharp eye for grammatical and punctuation errors of omission and commission. Mistakes jump out at me. If you need to have a text you have written cleaned up, I can do that for you quickly and efficiently.

Study Skills

As a former high school English teacher and college admissions counselor, I am well-versed in assisting students with their study skills as well as time management skills (the two are closely linked). I teach students how to prioritize assignments, "decode" essay/assignment prompts, and break down tasks into logical and specific components. I also teach them how to read textbook and literature assignments so they look for important elements first and then the secondary details. I review different learning techniques, depending on the assignments or tests.

I have particular expertise in 20th-century English and American literature, as well as 17th-century literature, including John Milton and the metaphysical poets. In college, I wrote an honors thesis on John Milton's "Paradise Lost", which compared the visual elements of the great poem to the contemporary Baroque movement in art. I have strong skills in helping students analyze pieces of literature so they can write effective essays.

I have a B.A. in English from UC Berkeley and a M.A.T. with a concentration in English from Harvard. I took literature classes that ranged from Chaucer to modern American and English literature. Additionally, I took classes in European literature. I have always read widely in all types of literature and have a solid knowledge of major authors. Since I am also a student of history, I can contextualize literature for students.

College Counseling

I worked as a college admissions and financial aid counselor at a high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 12 years. During that time, I edited many student essays and wrote many college recommendations. My students were accepted at colleges all over the country, from Ivy League schools to local colleges. I was a member of the California Student Aid Commission, representing secondary schools in California. I held volunteer positions with College Board and College Scholarship Service. As the college counselor, I recommended colleges for students, suggested summer high school programs, helped students plan their classes, worked with parents.

Irma is amazing!

My daughter was really nervous and scared about college applications in general, so I found her a tutor who could help her with college applications and essays. She is Irma, and we consider ourselves very lucky to have found her! Her vast experience with college counselling had not only helped my daughter boost her confidence, but it also helped my daughter submit some amazing college applications. She always encouraged my daughter on her writing skills which gave her the confidence to write to her full potential. My daughter really enjoyed working with Irma and was very grateful for all her help. Fast forward to now, college admission season has just ended, and we are extremely happy with results! My daughter was admitted to all the UCs that she applied to including UCLA and UC Berkeley! When Hannah was offered the Regent Scholarship from UCI and Chancellor's Reception invite from UCSB, I realized that the college admission officers seemed to have really liked what they read in my daughter's application. My daughter's dream school was UCLA so she could not be any happier with her results. I am not sure that she would have been this successful without Irma's help. Needless to say, we can't thank Irma enough! I highly recommend her to anyone needs helps in college counselling, college applications, and college essays as Irma is equipped with experience and knowledge.

Amazing English and College Essay Tutor

Irma has played a crucial role in my high school career. Her efforts have truly improved both my writing and analytical skills. She made sure that I understood how to better my work and she was very patient. Without her I would not have been able to achieve the grades I did in my English classes. She also helped me throughout the entire college application process, which was very long since i applied to 19 schools. I am sure that her support and help during high school is a major reason I was provided with great options for college: USC, UCSB, UCLA, UCSD, Macalester... I will be attending Reed College next year, a school that I would not have ever discovered if it wasn't for Irma. Every time we would meet I knew that she was attentive, knowledgeable, and always had my best interest in mind. I am so incredibly grateful to have been able to work with her as she has made me into a better student and person. The quality of my work has grown immensely due to her efforts. Before my father stumbled across Irma, we had been trying to find the right mentor for me but had not been successful. When I met with Irma, I knew that she was right for me. I greatly recommend Irma for anyone.

Exceptional college application expert

Irma has been instrumental in guiding my high school son from start to finish with the college application process. There is no way I could have pulled this off without her help! With her kind, patient and engaging method, she was able to keep my son focused and on track. My son has a tendency to procrastinate, and she was able to motivate him to get his essays completed in a timely manner, and he has submitted his applications well before the deadlines. The college application process is arduous, and takes much longer than you think it should - this is where her expertise comes in. She made this endeavor relatively painless for my son, and in the end, he was extremely pleased with the finished products. He responded very well to Irma's insights and suggestions, and her calm disposition. She definitely wiped out any anxiety on my part, and my son seemed virtually stress free during the process. I truly cannot recommend Irma highly enough. She is the best!! Thank you, Irma!
