I love writing and tutoring! I am a part-time tutor, an attorney, a non-profit professional, and a parent--and I write all the time. Teaching and helping people to learn are among my passions. I have had a lifelong commitment to education and to language especially.

My experiences in tutoring include a particular emphasis on mentoring the general writing and the drafting of legal memoranda and briefs. I also tutor for the LSAT and the GRE verbal sections in individual in-person and remote settings . My students have been both native English speakers and speakers of English as a second language. My approach is unique, bringing helpful analytical tools from other disciplines and many years of writring experience.

I have very strong English language skills, with a BA and graduate studies in English. I am an accomplished writer and a voracious reader. I can write, ghostwrite, proofread, or edit any text.

My philosophy regarding tutoring is to always be supportive and patient. Lessons should truly be a learnig experience for the student. The progress and pacing of the sessions are directly linked to the student's ability to grasp the material. With children, I also involve the parents as much as possible to ensure that the skills and learning are reinforced.

The measure of my success is the student's increasing comfort level with whatever he or she finds most challenging. Ideally, he or she will become more interested in and intellectually curious about coursework as well. Achievement comes from confidence!

Let's work together to achieve the results you want and to reach the goals you have set for yourself.

A lifelong voracious reader, I majored in English to explore great books in depth and to learn how to write critical essays. I then began my Master's level studies with the intent of teaching. My interests run from the classics of American and English literature to contemporary world literature. My husband and I read to our own children from infancy. They have become wonderful readers in their own right. My thirteen-year-old daughter is the author of two novels on the internet site wattpad. I love to share my love and exploration of literature with students. A deeper understanding of the author and the context in which she/he wrote greatly enhance the experience of reading a novel. Additionally the more a student reads, the more accomplished he/she becomes in his/her own writing.

Great tutor with a great teaching method!

Joan and I met many times before my LSAT test date, and in a few weeks, a relatively short amount of time, she was able to adequately prepare me with various methods for solving all types of problems. I found her approach to be very helpful, patient, and most importantly effective. She was always on time and prepared with supplementary materials to aid in a deeper understanding of the LSAT's contents. Having just completed the exam, I'm absolutely positive that I would not feel as confident as I do now had it not been for my sessions with Joan. I highly recommend contacting her if you're looking to take the LSAT!

Amazing tutor!

Ms. Joan was very patient with me and explained not only her way of doing things but also ways that might work better for me depending on how I figure out problems. She came fully prepared with materials and not only gave me the knowledge to get the problems done, but the confidence to believe in what I was doing. By far the best tutor.
