During my 40 years of university teaching, I saw first hand the struggle a large number of college students have with basic concepts of high school math. In my opinion, the K-12 educational system does not emphasize understanding of math; instead, it takes a"plug and chug" approach to teaching the subject - students just go through "busy work", with little understanding of basic mathematical concepts behind the exercises they are required to complete. I entered tutoring to help them with this subject in their early days of exposure to this subject so that they can be more successful in college.
Therefore, I now tutor 4th - 12th grade students, mostly in math, and sometimes, in science. My tutoring philosophy is to help students understand math and its many real life applications. I find it most rewarding when I can help a student feel confident about math, a confidence that better enables them to be successful in life.
I am an outstanding tutor because I care about a student's overall success, not just his/her math proficiency.
I am patient with students recognizing that every student learns differently.
