About James

Bio

I have a lot of experience helping students through both teaching and tutoring students in the Southern Illinois Area. I have been a teacher at Southern Illinois University during my time as a graduate student. I have taught or TA'd a class each semester for the last seven years and have been an instructor of record twice. I have been the teaching assistant for Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, and Field Plot Techniques (a statistics class dealing with designs). I have also been instructor of...

I have a lot of experience helping students through both teaching and tutoring students in the Southern Illinois Area. I have been a teacher at Southern Illinois University during my time as a graduate student. I have taught or TA'd a class each semester for the last seven years and have been an instructor of record twice. I have been the teaching assistant for Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, and Field Plot Techniques (a statistics class dealing with designs). I have also been instructor of record for Precision Agriculture and Soil Fertility Evaluation (a mixture of soil chemistry and fertilizer application math).

On top of that, I have started tutoring for a few different subjects within graduate school. I am one of the main contacts for people to help understand their statistics, both in Biostatistics and in their actual graduate projects at the school. I am well versed in using R and JMP for statistical analysis and for helping the students to understand what is being asked and how to understand their results. I have also done analysis for understanding models for systems, the algebra in the models, and qualitative versus quantitative analysis.

I have worked with statistics and statistical models in order to help understand how those models work. My main program to use for this is R due to it's flexibility and power. A high knowledge of algebra is needed for this type of work.

My research and schooling rely heavily on my knowledge of biology and biological systems. I need to understand how plant systems work and how to analyze those results in order to provide correct answer. Because of this, I know what needs to be known and understood both in biology and biostatistics.

Knowledgeable, Patient, and Prepared!!

I have used many tutors on Wyzant but James was fantastic. I had sent him an R programming assignment that I was struggling with and when it came time for the lesson, it was obvious that he had spent a considerable amount of time reviewing it. Because of this, he was able to quickly identify what I did wrong, and help me understand better. I definintely plan on using James again in the future!

Knowledgeable, patient and a good listener

James and I primarily looked at simple and multiple linear regressions. He's super knowledgeable and patient. He brings a calmness and lightness to a tutoring session, which is really helpful when you're anxious and nervous about learning biostats concepts. He's also really nimble with R Studio and knows his code well. He was able to troubleshoot on the spot, enabling us to get through a lot in an hour-and-a-half. Highly recommended.

We went over Chemistry basics and some microbiology. Very good in helping me to understand the periodic table and electron structure. We also covered the Lewis structure. Chemistry is a very intimidating subject to me and James explains the concepts in a way that I can understand.
