Hi, I'm Josh! As a junior in high school, I achieved a perfect SAT score; subsequently was accepted to Harvard, Columbia, Brown, and every other college I applied to; graduated from Yale; and decided to give back to help others master the intricacies of admissions testing! I've now been professionally tutoring middle schoolers and high schoolers for a little over 9 years.
To be honest, I do not believe the SAT, ACT, ISEE and their ilk are very reflective of intelligence. I DO believe that these tests have tricks and methods that are able to be mastered with proper guidance.
I previously rose to the ranks of Senior Tutor at a prestigious New York test prep firm, where one of my students held the company record for largest score increase on the SAT. I'm now based in sunny LA! I’ve had great success working with students on subjects ranging from AP Literature to middle school algebra, and in 2018, I even had the privilege of being flown from LA to Italy to live on a gorgeous estate for several weeks tutoring the scion of a pasta fortune. (They asked me to stay for the whole school year, but I had to politely say “scusi, no.”)
I think one key to my success is making sure students ENJOY their sessions with me! I have found it is very possible to make sure students achieve content mastery AND learn the relevant strategies for a given test/subject AND still have a good time. I've been told I have a naturally entertaining demeanor (I do have a a background in theatre too), and I don't consider a session a success until I've gotten at least one laugh from a student in between solving algebraic equations or investigating misplaced modifiers.
Moreover I take a very individualistic approach; every learner is different, and the tips and concepts that unlock success for one student may not work for the next. I try to adapt to and encourage each student’s own best practices.
