I am a retired high school math teacher from a large comprehensive New York City High School. I have taught high school mathematics for 14 years. The 2 major Courses I taught include Common Core Algebra 1 and Geometry. I have been involved with writing the Common Core Curriculum and corresponding lessons for my school and developing shared assessments.

I taught at Queensboro Community College for 8 years in their Kids College and 21st Century Learning Program. At Queensboro I have taught courses in: Algebra 1, Pre-Algebra, Specialized High School Test Prep, and Math SAT Test Prep. I also taught a course in Introduction to College Algebra.

I have worked for several tutoring organizations and privately tutored high school students on a one to one basis. This is my 6th year with Wyzant where I have tutored nearly 1300 hours both in person and online. I also tutored several students for both the SAT and the ACT.

While at my current school I was the Internship Coordinator and was a recipient of the Above and Beyond Award given by WABC TV in 2007.

I feel that my strengths are in communicating key math concepts, and an understanding of the specifics of both the curriculum and on the appropriate standardized tests. Additional strengths include making it relevant to outside interests especially business applications, and establishing a good working relationship with my students.

My educational background includes a BA in Economics, an MBA in Accounting, and a Master's in Math Education.

I am willing to travel to your home or to a library for tutoring. I am also comfortable doing online tutoring using the Wyzant platform.

Knowledgeable, patient and friendly

Allen taught concepts in a way my daughter could understand. He gave her strategies and a workbook to practice her math examples. Allen knows math and what it takes to be successful. He knows it is important for students to have confidence that they can do math as well.
