About Lisa Kaye

Bio

For 30 years, I've truly enjoyed helping students learn to play violin and viola. Starting beginners is fun, and helping experienced players progress is rewarding. In addition to classical training, I have learned non-traditional methods. I create an individual approach for each student, using a variety of tools. My students learn how to get a nice tone from the first lesson. (No obnoxious screeching allowed!) I would love to share my knowledge and help you play beautifully!

My whole life...

My whole life has been a musical journey. I decided to play violin when my kindergarten class heard the elementary orchestra perform. I finally started violin in fourth grade and began private lessons the following summer. Then, my family moved at the end of fifth grade, and my new school had no orchestra program. I was devastated! My parents soon bought me a violin and lots of music, but I wasn't able to take lessons or play in an orchestra again until high school. In college, I pursued a music degree, hoping to give other students the opportunities I lost. That dream has come true! In 2005, I helped start an after-school orchestra program in our middle school. It has expanded to the elementary and high school. What a great opportunity for students!

I have taught private lessons and string classes for 30 years to students ranging in age from 4 to 60 years old. In 2020, I learned to effectively teach music lessons online when our schools were shut down during the covid-19 pandemic. All along, I have continued to perform as a soloist and orchestra member, which helps me stay aware of the student's point of view.

I earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Idaho State University. The emphasis is orchestral strings, and my main instruments are violin and viola. I also hold a current teaching certificate with a K-12 music endorsement.

My schedule is flexible, and lesson length and frequency can be adapted to your needs. Please contact me to see how I can help you begin or continue your journey as a violinist or violist.

I have taught private violin and viola students (preschoolers to senior citizens) and public school violin, viola, cello, and bass students, from (3rd - 12th graders). I use a combination of classical and non-traditional methods, drawing on a variety of tools to adapt to individual playing needs. Beyond building basic technique, I like to give students and parents some imput into the music we explore together. My goal us to help each student enjoy playing his/her instrument.

Extraordinary teacher/violinist; Tailored Lessons

I could not have a better violin teacher than Lisa. As an adult violin beginner, I really appreciate Lisa's open teaching method that is tailored to best fit the student. Lisa provides the perfect amount of structure and free-form teaching methods. Lisa is great at providing challenging exercises for me to practice and amazing at guiding me when I decide not to do exercises over learning a new fun piece. To put that another way, Lisa is great at thinking on her feet and knowing how to guide a student. Experience and a passion of teaching are evident in Lisa's teaching methods. Lisa is very kind and encouraging, in a way that I know all complements are genuine. I am really lucky to have found such a talented teacher and violinist. Thanks Lisa!

Patient and amazing

Lisa is amazingly patient and outstanding, my son has improved so much since she started teaching him. My son can be emotional when he isn’t getting things, and she never gives up on him, and gives him time to collect himself

Knowledge, Kind, and helpful violin tutor!

Lisa was very enjoyable to work with and helped me on short notice prepare a piece for an upcoming funeral. She is able to efficiently teach virtually, and I really enjoyed getting to learn from here. She was very helpful, and I highly recommend.

I couldn't ask for a better instructor

Lisa was not only knowledgeable but relatable. I am a 40-year-old adult returning to the viola after nearly 20 years. In this day in age while we are encouraged more to pursue whatever our hearts desire, there is still the occasional, "Wow, you're how old and doing what", she encouraged me to not only get back on the horse but was able to quickly assess my skill level and help me adjust my bow grip and posture and we were off to the races. Thank you sooooo much. I'll be sticking with Lisa for my Viola lessons.

KIND, RESPONSIBLE and A WONDERFUL SPIRIT!!!

Lisa is so patient and kind!!! Our son Stefan is physically challenged as well on the Autistic Spectrum and needed an open-minded instructor that is able to patiently review techniques such as reminding Stefan to keep the bow in the middle of the bridge, how to correctly place fingers on the strings and when fingering the violin becomes too challenging Lisa finds ways Stefan can adapt to play the musical piece. Lisa understands some students may not be candidates for the Conservatory but if a student has the desire to learn to play the violin no matter what level Lisa will lovingly teach them. Lisa is Always a Pleasure to Work With!!!
