Note that my schedule changes every week, so please chat with me to arrange a time that'll work for both of us.

I've been working professionally as an artist since 2009, making graphics and illustrations for clients and having worked for Disney Research for just over a year.

I have successfully helped students with a large range of accomplishments -- from simply improving their skills within an hour of lesson time as a hobby to helping students gain successful admission into their desired schools through audition and portfolio prep processes, at all school levels (from magnet middle schools to graduate schools). I've helped artists get their first freelance art gigs, and I've helped students win contests and scholarships.

I not only help in the process of drawing/illustration/animation itself, I also help with everything that goes alongside the raw skills. Such topics include presentation, what to expect from the industry and how to deal with any personal/artistic/psychological challenges that may come with honing the craft. Whatever comes up, I am here to help students work through it.

I specialize in drawing/illustration, digital painting, and 2D animation, mostly in the context of video games (with 2D graphics).

My most commonly used method of helping students improve their drawing skills is taking images or screenshots of their artwork and marking them up with suggestions and sending them back to students to review. I can help with technical tasks like proportion and anatomy, character designs, story/presentation ideas and anything else pertaining to students' art projects.

My hope and mission is to successfully distribute my knowledge, skills and experience to anyone who wants to acquire them. Thank you for your interest!

Drawing

I've been drawing since I was about 4 years old. I was able to sharpen my skills enough to accepted into the Art School at Carnegie Mellon University, and graduated with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts. I worked for Disney Research as an artist intern for a year and a half, and since then have been freelancing as an artist for many different clients. My education included lots of discussion, reflection and thoughts on how to approach our work; how we see it, how we produce it and how we present it.
Painting

Painting

I've been digitally painting since I was about 11-12 years old. My best works that got me into the Art School at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Disney Research, consisted of digital paintings. I've been providing concept art and illustrations professionally since 2009. Most of the time these have been in the context of developing video games as well as promoting them. You may request a portfolio sample from me.

Exceptional tutor

Can't say enough about Emily's subject matter expertise, communication skills, and genuine interest in helping my son think critically about art, what it means to him, and his goals. A great find!

Encouraging and helpful insight into the art industry and developing a strong portfolio

Emily helped me understand how to improve my portfolio for the entertainment industry, and of the importance of being authentic and creating my own work. She was very kind, helpful, and encouraging, and connected me to other artists on Twitter and art share groups to help me grow my audience. I learned that I have a lot of exciting work ahead to create my own work and publicize myself, and I really appreciated the insight she has from her personal experience with creating her stories and art. She also helped me understand how to balance practicing to improve my work with creating art just for myself for fun! I really enjoyed our session, and was happy to meet her. I will definitely make an appointment with Emily in the future if I need help with art, understanding the industry, or my portfolio!
