Bio

I have a strong desire to help students succeed in their reading achievement. Developing a love of reading, the love of words and vocabulary will help to enrich and sustain a child's educational career. I am passionate about helping students gain independence in their ability to recognize when meaning is breaking down for them, and to give them skills and strategies to know "what to do", when "I'm stuck". Giving students skills and strategies provides them with the necessary tools to succeed when they're reading, writing and learning independently.

My experiences in elementary teaching for 35 years, a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, literacy coaching, professional development training teachers and providing strong interventions has helped many students and teachers reach their full potential as learners. Students have gained a skill set that enables them to be successful readers in school settings and their teachers have gained a skill set that allows them to meet each child's varying needs.

I specialize in strong interventions related to comprehension and fluency. Students who understand text, at grade level, are successful at mastering state mandated tests, but also develop a strong love for choosing books of interest and challenge. I individualize instruction to meet the child's varying needs and we work to set short and long term goals. I use formative assessment to determine what the specific "next steps" for a child will be. Together, we will find books and topics of interest to students in the areas of reading and writing.

I will hold myself, and the student, to high standards. I will provide formal and informal assessment opportunities and will ask for feedback on the tutoring sessions. a 24-hour cancellation policy is required, but I am willing to be flexible to make-up sessions in certain circumstances. We will work in a quiet, uninterrupted setting to ensure that each session is of quality for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and having the opportunity to work together

Common Core

I have written Common Core Standards aligned curriculum for Willlmar, MN and Minneapolis Public Schools in grades K-5. Each of the English Language Arts standards was addressed in the Reading/Language portion of the Focused Instruction Curriculum Guides. I have provided Professional Development to groups of teachers and administrators in Minneapolis and Willlmar, MN. We helped teachers to "unwrap" the standards and look at expectations for their grade level, as well as review the vertical alignment within standards.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught grades K-5 for the past 35 years. I am a certified teacher in the state of Minnesota. I have tutored students during the summer and the school year. During my teaching career, I provided in-class interventions to students who were struggling and through effective instructional decisions was able to help the students to grow at least 1.5 years, according to their NWEA test scores. My Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction has allowed me to see the full scope and sequence in the development of literacy in children. I design individualized tutoring programs to meet the needs of the student which will target areas of concern and set goals accordingly.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

Handwriting is a skill that can be taught through direct instruction, or embedded within the current curriculum requirements. Students handwriting can be improved when using current language arts, writing, or reading response journals as a basis. I have helped students to set goals for handwriting based on their current legibility; we have used poetry, as a means to copy and build fluency, as well as skill pages which are done as homework. During Writer's workshop, students use rough drafts, and revision/editing time to make handwriting improvements.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have a keen understanding of Phonics instruction and developmentally appropriate instruction as it relates to Phonics. I have provided interventions which focused on phonics. Phonics should be taught explicitly and sequentially in order to be effective instruction. The use of Phonics readers supports students as they are learning the phonetic principles involved in early reading development.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Study skills are varied by student, grade level, and developmental need. It is important to understand where the students' strengths and areas of concern lie, and then make a plan accordingly. Students benefit from instruction that provides them with tools, skills and strategies that can be used inter-disciplinary. Teaching students to monitor their comprehension will benefit them in all content areas of study skills.
