I am a 26 year veteran teacher who has worked extensively in the core subjects with children who have difficulty learning and are considered at risk. My experience and degrees are in the areas of Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Autism, and Reading. I have extensive expertise in the areas of reading, math, the process of learning, and the development of language acquisition. Since I grew up in a mathematical household (my father being one of the top 10 engineers in the country) I have developed the ability to explain simple and complex math concepts to my students. This has allowed me to work with students from Kindergarten through high school. Most recently I went to college with one of my student helping them through college Algebra.

I believe that all children are capable of learning if given the opportunity and the correct method of instruction. I use a hands on approach to assist children in making learning come alive and relevant to them. For this reason, I utilize the students strengths, and learning styles to assist them in overcoming their difficulty with a subject and become successful in the classroom.

I hold Master Reading, Special Education, and ESL certifications from Texas in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. In addition, I hold an elementary, and reading specialist certification from Michigan. Additionally, I am versed in special education law, as a result I will attend 504 and ARD meeting as an advocate for my student to ensure that the school provides the best learning environment for them.

Maria is the best EVER!

I waited a long time to write this review because I was not sure how to put into words how much Maria has helped my son. We started working with her at the beginning of second grade. My son was just keeping up and had some major academic gaps (math- spelling- reading). Since working with her, he has gained confidence and dramatically improved his test scores. His teacher, who has been teaching for a long time and is wonderful said, “I am not sure who your tutor is, but she is wonderful. He tells me things she says, and I see what he has learned and I am so impressed. I have seen and heard about a lot of tutors in my time, but you have a great one”. Maria is in tune with what his struggles are, what frustrates him, and how he learns best. He has never ONCE said he does not want to meet and work with her. Actually, he WANTS to. It helps him feel like he has his school week under control and takes away his stress. I am so blessed to have found her!

Experienced, patient, compassionate tutor

Hi! I've been on Wyzant awhile now for tutoring for my son as well as myself. I had been looking for someone to "connect" with my son. Maria was that person. She has a lot of experience, is very patient, knowledgeable, compassionate, and has a gentle spirit. I'm really glad we met her. She's worked with my son in geometry and we'll likely continue with English as well. My son is looking forward to working with Maria and continued successes in his educational journey.

Maria knows how to connect with students

Our son has ADHD and has been struggling over the last year. Maria has figured out how to help him focus during class time as well as help him understand the various subjects. We've spent months trying to help him but Maria managed to get him more organized and help him to understand the strategies that work for him. She's very good and you will see results.
