I am an Academic Coach who specializes in ADHD and other focused related issues. I hold degrees in Psychology, Adult Education and completed an Educational specialist degree at Liberty University specializing in Teaching and Learning (K-12). I currently hold certifications in ESL and certified as an Attention Deficit Consultant (ADC-C) by the American Institute of Health Care Professional, Inc. since July 2018.
My educational philosophy is a combination of Bloom's Taxonomy and the Taxonomy of the Significant learning Experience (SLE); believing that learning must allow for repetition and application of that which was taught so that information moves from mere memorization to actual learning. The role of the educator must go beyond the responsibility of dispensing knowledge and tests, to creating an environment which would inspire and motivate students desire to learn. This can only occur in an environment of mutual respect and a basic belief that all students are capable of learning. This is what forces the educator to discover the method in which the learner will be the most successful. Overall, education is a balancing act whereby educators provide a positive influence, leading and guiding students down a path of discovery; while at the same time ensuring that learners obtain the knowledge, skills and moral development necessary to positively contribute to society.
I have extensive experience in the following areas: Elementary Education, Algebra, Biology, Physical & Environmental Sciences; GED and Test Prep; study skills including time management, goal setting, and organization; Microsoft Office - word, excel and PowerPoint, Public Speaking, and Communications. In addition, I have also taught coursework in reading and essay writing. I work with individuals of all ages with ADHD, teaching them and their caregivers strategies which would increase learning efficiency.

Amazing ADHD consultant and tutor - Very knowledgeable!

Our son has ADHD and has struggled with his quizzes, tests, and writing assignments for several years. He was always left feeling frustrated. We tried to work with our son's teachers and put other supports in place with no luck. We were so lucky to find Coach Karen when we did! She's a true treasure!! We have been working with her for almost a year, allowing us to form an excellent working relationship - she is easy to talk to, understanding, and patient. During this time, Coach Karen has helped our son improve his comprehension and writing, including his note-taking skills; math has advanced about two grade levels. Grades have continued to improve throughout the year between 4th and 5th grade to the point it's almost straight A's and prompted an invitation to participate in math club at school. This provided a new confidence that he didn't have before. Coach Karen has also coached us on ADHD approaches/practices to help address situations with our son at home or school. In addition to providing a better understanding of how an ADHD mind works and how to incentivize him best to keep him on top with his school work and other tasks. Our son is in a much better place now; he always looks forward to learning new things during his tutoring sessions with Coach Karen! We are extremely thankful for all she has helped our son with and happy to continue working with her. We highly recommend Coach Karen!

Engaging teaching, introduced study skills to lesson

Karen helped with reading comprehension and vocabulary for my 2nd grader. She introduced note-taking skills and how to keep a vocabulary diary to the lesson. She's a lovely person, well-organized and engaging with my daughter.

Thank you so much, and I enjoy seeing the growth in him too.

Scouring through all the profiles to find a gem!

Relatability is such a huge factor for my kid...Coach Karen is personable, concise, efficient, and flexible. We are an ADHD family who plays travel hockey so her ability and willingness to flex with us has been priceless. We just had a session (organization skills and social studies test prep) from a hotel room in Vegas (we live on east coast). My son said that he had no idea how easier things can be with just getting organized, using short-cuts with focused and directed attention to the stuff that actually matters. I have a feeling this will be a long-term relationship as long as she will have us.

Helps not just my son, but shows me how to help him too

Ms. Karen is a wonderful tutor! My son was struggling in 2nd grade. Homework was a battle of wills and it felt like my son could not get his test scores to show how much he actually knew. He was easily frustrated and starting to get very discouraged. Ms. Karen started with reading and giving him tools to focus. By the end of the year, he was slightly above grade level and we've started working on math too. My son always finishes the session feeling positive and I feel armed with games/strategies/help for the rest of the week. I couldn't be more grateful for Ms. Karen and I would highly recommend her!
