Hi. My name is Katherine. Are you looking for a tutor with lots of experience and plenty of patience? I'm comfortable tutoring children, teens, and adults in many subjects. I worked as an elementary school teacher for 10 years in public and private schools, and am the mother of 3 grown children -- so nothing scares me! For almost 20 years, I've taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to children and adults of all levels, and test preparation for TOEFL, ACT/SAT, and the GED exams. My specialty is reading, writing, elementary math, and ESL/EFL. I have a Master's in Education, and am a student-centered teacher (i.e., I don't lecture!), with an informal, supportive, and friendly style. I believe the best way to learn is when we're having fun, so I try to make my lessons engaging. My first meeting with prospective students is always free! :) Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson.

I was a "docent" (Latin for teacher) at an art museum in Washington, DC for several years. In preparing for this volunteer position, all the docents were trained for a full year in art history by the director of the museum, which was an amazing experience! I've also taken many art history classes in university, and visited many, many art museums around the world. I am passionate about art and love learning and sharing my passion.

I love sharing my love of English and learning about my students' cultures and native languages at the same time. I believe that we are all teachers and learners, and have much to share with each other. In addition to traveling extensively, I've tried to learn several languages, so I'm very familiar with the challenges of learning a foreign language. I've learned so much from my students who have come from all over the world!

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been an elementary teacher since 2002, working in a variety of private and public school settings. My last full-time assignment was at a private, parent co-op school in Plymouth as 1 of 3 teachers in a multi-age classroom for 1st-4th grade students. The school specialized in individualized teaching (our teacher to student ratio was approximately 1 teacher to 6 students!), so I'm used to working one-on-one with students of all abilities and ages. In addition, I've also been a "regular" 1st grade teacher, and have taught a variety of resource classes to students from kindergarten through 8th grade, including Spanish, computer skills, and library.

As an elementary teacher, I've taught phonics to both native speakers of English as well as non-native English speakers. I've also taught English as a Second Language for many years (to both children and adults), which emphasizes the learning of phonics. As a student of several other languages, I know how difficult our language is, and especially how challenging phonics is to learn!

Wonderful tutor!

We contacted Katherine given her extensive experience with elementary / ESL students. My son had six sessions with her so far. We loved her from the very first session. She has a wonderful personality perfect for teaching children and/or ESL students - extremely patient, knowledgeable, understanding, and genuinely interested in her student's success. She is also detail-oriented and has a very focused and personalized lesson plan for each session. We cannot say enough positive things about Katherine. Strongly recommended!

Great tutor

I have studied English for long time by myself without any tutor. Although she is has been my first English tutor, I am feeling she is teaching me very well. Before starting the tutor, I asked her what I wanted and she explained me how she would teach me. Tutoring I want is that, I study English first, and she check my progress and answer my questions raised. And, when I need something related to English, such as document preparation, presentation, even culture, she always help very kindly in any time, even not in class time. I am pretty sure that if I keep studying English with her, my English will improve a lot.

Wonderful Tutor!!

I signed up with Katherine to help my daughter with her art history class. She is a very hands-on, visual learner and has been struggling with all the virtual learning. She has been so pleased with Katherine, everything from her patience with her to her study tips and teaching strategy. I am very pleased and would highly recommend her!

Exceeded our expectations by far!

We signed up for Wyzant so that my niece would be able to take English lessons online and we got the most amazing tutor we could have asked for. The tutor Katherine is absolutely amazing and my niece loves her. She is so friendly and sweet, yet so professional and has so much patience, that we couldn’t believe how lucky we were to find her from the first try. I have read her reviews and she seemed like the best choice to help my niece study English as a second language. I have to say she exceeded our expectations by far. She makes the lessons so much fun and has a way of interacting with the kids that she actually motivates them to learn even more. We absolutely love her, we don’t have enough words to say what a positive experience she had turned this into. We could not recommend her enough. She is AMAZING! Thank you, Katherine, Patricia loves you. As far as the platform goes, it is user-friendly so we were happy to have discovered this website.

Great teacher for preparation of a Job interview

I had classes with Katherine S. in order to improve my ability of a job interview as an Engineer. With comprehensive knowledge about it, she taught me a lot of things including US culture related to job interview, answering for various questions, correcting my CV/cover letter, etc. I really liked her way to teach and to communicate, and I appreciated her efforts.

Patient tutor, very helpful to improve my son's writing

Before taking lessons with Katherine, my son was not very interested in writing. Katherine found ways to encourage him, and help improve his grammar along the way. Now, my son has started to enjoy writing. Thank you, Katherine!
