I am a licensed teacher with 27 years experience in the field of education, and I have a Masters in Education: Curriculum & Instruction. I have experience teaching all grade levels K-6, plus working with special needs students. I have taught in a one-room schoolhouse on the Nebraska plains, a small town public school in Nebraska, a parochial urban school in Denver, low socio-economic public schools in Colorado Springs, and a project-based-learning charter school in Minnesota. I have also homeschooled and worked as a middle school special ed paraprofessional. I have a unique way of helping my students understand new or difficult concepts by using a language they already understand or making connections to things they are personally interested in. In addition to being a Minnesota licensed teacher, I am a mom of 5 children, one with ADHD/SPD.
I am trained in (to name a few):
** Lindamood-Bell
** Orton-Gillingham (Level I/K-3)
** Reading First
** Project Read
** Saxon Phonics
**Handwriting Without Tears
** Step Up to Writing
My training and experience using the Orton- Gillingham based programs, specifically designed for students with dyslexia, allows me to use direct instruction strategies and identify a student's specific needs so as not to waste time or money. Blending Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell and the pieces of the other programs I have training in allows me to meet my student's unique needs and comfort levels.
I am comfortable helping students of all ages with reading and writing needs, as well as elementary math (K-6, and business math). I enjoy the great outdoors and have been known to take my lessons outside on sunny days. I am able to incorporate sensory breaks or sensory items into my time with students as needed, and still focus on the lesson being addressed.
My lessons are designed to focus on the emotional level as well as the academic level of my students. I know not every person learns the same way and how frustration and humiliation leads t
