About Paul

Bio

I am currently a professor of chemistry at Samford University. I teach Foundations of Chemistry 1 and 2 (genchem), organic chemistry 1 and 2, and research internship. My deep passion for chemistry comes out in my active classrooms, weird chemistry analogies, and patient pastoral approach. Give me a chance to help you and I'm sure you'll succeed.

Great teaching comes from inviting the student to imagine what is possible, not only in the world but also in themselves, and to know they are capable of doing amazing things. Bringing one's passion and excitement for the subject and pouring it into the lectures and the research is absolutely essential to student success and the ultimate reward: discovery. It is discovery and ultimately the sharing of that discovery through publication that we strive for. Contribution to the world is the goal of the chemist, and the passion to do it drives us. Showing our students that the drugs, materials, sensors, foods, and methods which keep our world going start in a flask of things either dug from the earth, or distilled out of crude oil, simplifies the concept of synthesis. As in chemical synthesis, in education we must take students' knowledge and build them up step by step.

I believe that we must fundamentally avoid the fear of being wrong in front of our peers and learn the power of not knowing, for it is in our ignorance that question and research are born. In my graduate organic seminar very few people would ask questions. "I don't know," is where we begin rather than an end.

I live with my amazing wife and our four boys under 10 in Homewood, AL.

I have learned that student want to understand as much as they want to pass. Unfortunately, so many have somehow convinced themselves they must sacrifice learning for low-level passing. This is something I hope to change. My goal is to work within the textbook and teaching you currently have and find ways of translating that information into way you understand. Then teach you to speak or write about it in the way your teacher or text desires. That way you get the knowledge AND the grade.

The more complicated the math gets, the more proficient we must be in our basic understanding of the fundamentals (the grammar of math). In that regard, I have always enjoyed working with math students of all levels to determine the best way they learn 'the language.' I received an A on my senior project which was the AIChE contest problem for finding a chemistry error. I am proficient in Excel and MathCad as well as Calculus and Algebra.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is the study of carbon containing molecules. Typically organic chemists are interested in the structure and reactivity of molecules made up by carbon and elements on the top right region of the periodic table of elements. Physical organic chemistry focuses describing bonding, kinetics and thermodynamics of reactions. Synthesis is the study of how to build molecules you want. Together these two subsets of organic chemistry describe a very exciting field that effects everything from the gas in your car and your plastic water bottle to drugs and medicines. I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry and have studied all facets of this exciting field. I also love to teach it because I believe that in teaching we share an exciting world with future scientists while simultaneously perfecting out own understanding.

Paul helped boost my confident by relying on full understanding of some basic engineering concepts. There is no need to hesitate or wonder when you know that everything goes into a system must come out (assuming no accumulation). He demonstrated the way to solve a mass balance and also showed me to self correct, self assess and redirect to get to the right answer.
