I'm a graduate of Haverford College, a top-ten liberal arts institution, and am currently a PhD student in Comparative Literature at NYU where I also teach undergraduate literature courses. I'm a graduate of Haverford College, a top-ten liberal arts institution, and am currently a PhD student in Comparative Literature at NYU where I also teach undergraduate literature courses. For almost a decade, I've been working with students of all backgrounds and skill levels, tutoring high school and college writing, as well as the SAT, ACT and, for the past four years, the GRE. Additionally, I have designed SAT, ACT and GRE practice questions for professional tutoring companies which have been used in both classroom settings and in practice test booklets. When helping students prepare for standardized tests, I begin with a comprehensive diagnostic exam to isolate both problem areas and areas of competence, which I then use as a basis to construct a personalized study program for each student. My goal is always to help the student maximize their potential in the most efficient way possible—so neither time nor money is wasted!

I have also worked as a private admissions counselor for the past five years, harnessing my extensive behind-the-scenes experience at top-tier undergraduate and graduate programs to help prospective students craft applications that speak to admissions committees, and most importantly, that stand out amongst the endless stacks of applications that clutter their desks. I offer comprehensive admissions counseling (covering everything from the application to the interview) as well as assistance with individual aspects of the application (essays, personal statements, CVs, etc.). In the past twelve months alone, I've guided successful undergraduate and graduate applications to Stanford, Columbia, Brown, Yale, NYU Stern, Wharton, and Harvard Medical School, among others.

I have played and studied guitar for close to fifteen years, and have taught guitar lessons for the last five. I am an experienced player with a solid knowledge of musical theory, and possess a highly advanced technical prowess. I teach basic to intermediate guitar, as well as advanced blues, rock, and "shred" guitar. Regarding these advanced topics, I specialize in teaching blues, pentatonic, and major/minor scale improvisation, as well as difficult "shred" guitar techniques, such as sweep picking, legato and alternate picking.

As a graduate of a liberal arts college ranked #11 of all colleges and universities by Forbes, and as a current student in a PhD program ranked #3 in my field, I am intimately familiar with the intricate nature of undergraduate and graduate admissions processes, and especially the admissions processes of so called "top tier" universities. As a minority student at Haverford, I was frequently asked to meet with prospective minority students to help them decide if Haverford was a good choice for them, and to help them weigh the pros and cons of attending Haverford versus others schools they were considering or had applied to. If they had not already been accepted to Haverford, I was also tasked with discussing their application with them, and giving advice that might help them improve their chances of admission. This not only gave me valuable experience with college counseling, but also afforded me a behind the scenes look at the admissions process, as staff frequently spoke with me about how admissions decisions are made, what they look for in a candidate, etc. Additionally, graduate students at NYU are an important part of the admissions process, and have a major impact on helping select future graduate students. As such, I have also been privy to the inner-workings of graduate student admissions, and have learned a lot of "inside information" about what graduate admissions committees do and do not want to see in "statements of purpose," the seriousness with which GRE scores are taken, and the role that letters of recommendation play. I believe this experience will greatly aid my ability to tutor college counseling effectively.

Tyler is really good at helping students! Since he is an English Literature major, he is good at writing. He is also very patient, and he would like to listen to your opinions and figure out how to improve your writing.
