Hello, my name is Sean. I'm currently a student at UW-Stevens Point seeking a Bachelor's degree and Teaching Certification in History and Social Sciences. My main areas of interest are several, including European and world history, music theory and history, reading and writing, as well as geography and political science. I was a student tutor in college for five semesters, helping students with writing, reading/literature comprehension, and researching. My tutoring style is built on patience...

Hello, my name is Sean. I'm currently a student at UW-Stevens Point seeking a Bachelor's degree and Teaching Certification in History and Social Sciences. My main areas of interest are several, including European and world history, music theory and history, reading and writing, as well as geography and political science. I was a student tutor in college for five semesters, helping students with writing, reading/literature comprehension, and researching. My tutoring style is built on patience first and foremost, striving to help students at their own individual pace to achieve the best results possible for them. I am fair, understanding, and make sure the students I tutor do their own work using their own ideas with me as their guide. When starting with a new student, I ease into the tutoring process, getting to know them and their learning style first so that we can become more comfortable with each other so I can tutor them according to their individual needs.

Though I have never taken composition courses nor taken formal composition instruction, I have over the past seven years learned the art independently. When I started, I honestly knew nothing about musical composition, but now, after many thousands of hours of hard, devoted work, I have a respectable and rather long list of good, creative compositions to proudly call my own. Mostly a private hobby of mine, I have never had any of my works performed, though I have circulated CDs of my works with the help of a musical notation program called Finale. My works include sonatas, duos, variously instrumented chamber works, symphonies, and other orchestral works. I am even currently working on two operas and a ballet. My compositional technique is highly individual, though it is generally influenced by Classical forms and rules.

Perhaps my strongest subject, I have used my knowledge and skills in the past to help college students with their own writings, resulting in noticeable success for them and comments of gratitude for me. Though I have never helped a student prepare for something as important as the ACT, I feel that I am quite capable of helping students achieve desired improvement and success in testing for the subject.

My knowledge of European history is far-ranging, from ancient empires to modern times. Since childhood, my interest in history has been avid and most enlightening. In college, I continued my fervent interest in the subject, taking courses encompassing European, American, world, and music history.

In the eighth grade, I placed second in my school's geography bee. I have always had a keen interest in geography and take great interest in world affairs and events. It's my belief that a sufficient knowledge of world geography is necessary for understanding the course of events past and present. In this modern era, I have noticed that too many students do not have an adequate knowledge of geography, which I believe completely hinders their appreciation and comprehension of the larger world.

The particular vein of music history in which I find immense interest is Classical music, of which I have collected a large library of CDs, music scores, and biographies. My interest in Classical music stems directly back to a trip I took to Germany and Austria in 2006, when I spent a day in Salzburg and happened to buy a Mozart CD on a whim. Upon hearing the music, I was entranced and the course of my life forever changed. My favorite composers for study are Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, though I very much enjoy studying the lives and music of other composers too, especially including J.S. Bach, Haydn, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Bizet. I even own a copy of the massive authoritative biography on W.A. Mozart, by Hermann Abert.

I was raised Catholic but in my early 20s stopped adhering to organized religion of any kind and no longer identify as a Catholic or a Christian. In college, I took an in-depth course on Islam and have attended various churches for the sake of curiosity and learning, including a Jewish synagogue, Lutheran churches, a Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and the traditional Latin Catholic Mass. My educational background in History has informed me very well on religious developments throughout human history, especially the Judeo-Christian group of religions but also other major world religions.

In college, I took all four semesters of music theory required for a two-year college degree and have a firm understanding of the subject. I was consistently in the top tier of the class and was only one of three students remaining by the end of that third semester. I have a confident understanding of the rules of counterpoint and part-writing, rules that have enriched my own musical compositions, which I write in my free time. I am also comfortable with music score analysis.
