Hello! My name is Anne and I am a writer and language coach with ten years tutoring experience.

I graduated from NYU where I studied Comparative Literature and Spanish. After school I went on to write professionally and to teach children and young adults both in the United States and abroad in Spain.

I am passionate about helping others to communicate effectively in pursuit of their academic and professional goals.

I tutor English, ESL, Spanish, SAT Reading/Writing and college readiness (admissions essay/personal statement)

My students vary in age, background and skill level. I fully welcome the variety, as each experience broadens my creative reach as a teacher. That being said, my ultimate goal is to cultivate a customized learning strategy that maximizes the effort and time that each individual student brings to their lessons.

I have committed myself to studying language training and have concluded that, by identifying my student's learning style(s) early on, I'm able to accelerate his or her proficiency far beyond the limits imposed by the traditional classroom.

My Philosophy in a Nutshell is this:
Anyone can improve their writing, learn to read with greater comprehension, boost their memory and attention, or excel at a second language; the key ingredient is a sincere openness to the varieties of learning methods available to teachers and their students. This is where one-on-one tutoring is the ultimate game changer! I say this confidently, having been the beneficiary of excellent tutoring through my years as an undergraduate student, my training as an interpreter/translator and beyond.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

As a student of foreign language and literature and an ESL teacher to students of all ages and backgrounds, I have strong feelings about the tutor's role. I owe a great debt to my own tutors who are an an inspiration to me still. I began learning my own second language, Spanish, at 19 years old and ascended from absolute beginner to advanced fluency before my graduation from the department of Comparative Literature at NYU four years later. I used this knowledge to teach ESL abroad as well as in the United States. My own language learning journey informs how I approach my students' issues--that is, with respect and a sincere desire to find a creative and relatable solution. I also have experience with Business English for non-native speakers and second language acquisition designed for a variety of specific vocations (hospitality, healthcare, property management, housekeeping and more).
Proofreading,

Proofreading

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with grammar. What others consider to be a "dry" discipline I find to be a necessary tool for achieving creativity in one's writing. However, as a tutor, my role is to make sure that your prose is clear and concise--that is, your reader should have no problem grasping your main points. Moreover, I'm here to save you from the small, embarrassing mistakes that kill your credibility as a writer and count heavily against you as a student or job applicant. I studied literature at NYU and have been writing and editing in the years since my graduation. I am familiar with multiple style guides; I keep their updated versions at close hand so I may ensure your writing is compliant. Expect your writing to be proofed to perfection and accurately cited.
Spanish,

Spanish

I began my study of Spanish as an undergraduate at NYU. My literature major required that I also reach an advanced level of proficiency in a foreign language. I am living proof that it is possible to start from the very beginning (as I did at 19) and, given the correct mindset, reach fluency. My unconventional journey brought me in touch with the unique challenges facing students at each level of their Spanish education: early doubts, stubborn plateaus in the intermediate stages, needlessly abstract grammar concepts to contend with (most people fail to recognize them even in English), and shyness in conversation. I have personally experienced all of these stages and have dedicated ten years to creating systems for learning that lie strong foundations for understanding a second language (and aren't boring!). I treat every lesson with the students' individual needs and strengths in mind. I currently work as a writer and translator and received my certification in Spanish/English medical interpreting in 2014,

Literature,

Literature

As a student of Comparative Literature at NYU, I dedicated more time and energy to reading (and writing about what I was reading) than to nearly any other activity. My curriculum was broad and explored the most famous works of fiction from around the world: Greek mythology, the BIble, Shakespeare's plays and Russian novels as thick as bricks and nearly as heavy. I am also acquainted with contemporary literature and literary theory. Of course, I cannot read every book that has ever been written, but I DO know how to teach my students the value of literature and how to write about it in a meaningful way (that will impress their teachers/professors!). I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds. I have no problem helping with writing assignments--from brainstorming, outlining and ultimately editing/proofreading the final draft. Exercises in reading and writing about literature will also be helpful to students who are looking to improve their standardized test scores and I'm glad to tailor my lessons toward that goal, as well.

I am a versatile English language coach with a degree in Comparative Literature from NYU and over 10 years experience teaching English, ESL and test preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE, DELE). My SAT prep students come to me with a wide range of ability and self-confidence. Some have been studying the test for months or longer; others are taking their fIrst steps. While familiarity with the SAT’s structure is essential for building winning strategies, I still believe in customizing my lessons to the individual. I demystify the rules of SAT grammar (which is the fundation of SAT Reading/Writing) in ways that resonate with my students’ natural learning styles; this way I can quickly spot and correct any unique obstacles to their future success. I address the test’s expectations for comprehension and critical thinking with a method that is two-fold: 1. Practical lessons in attention, time management and beating predictable “traps” and 2. Exercises for promoting awareness of context, narrative, tone, metaphor and word choice.

Over a year ago I began working with high school students on crafting their college admission essays, free responses and personal statements. I tailor my sessions to each individual, to his or her stage in the writing process, and to the university or program to which he/she is applying. We work together to identify experiences that demonstrate the students' character, accomplishments and goals (an objective eye can be surprisingly helpful at this brainstorming stage!). From there, we work to build a persuasive narrative, edit diligently and always check that the prompt has been fully addressed and the essay is customized for its audience. If several samples of writing and/or multiple versions of the primary essay are required, I can certainly help in these cases as well.

Anne explains grammar in a whole new way and it doesn't feel like work!

I really like that Anne starts the lesson with what I already know and builds up to the complicated stuff so all the steps make sense. Anne is very very patient and never boring. She is interested in me as a person and always reminds me that making mistakes is a part of learning.
