I have experience both tutoring and teaching. After graduation from Western Michigan University in 2007, I spent 5 years teaching 5th grade all subjects including a specific spelling/vocabulary curriculum and a full grammar program as well as Bible class. After 5 years working for a substitute company, I moved into a preschool position which I later left for another 5th grade position. I have also earned my masters in curriculum and instruction and am currently teaching 6th grade all subjects with an emphasis on math and ELA.

My tutoring experience includes students as young as 3rd grade and as advanced as the remedial writing classes for the local community college. I was the sole tutor, 2.5 hours per day, 5 days a week, for a student on the autism spectrum which was eventually followed by a position as a behavior technician for an autism center. Most recently, I have worked with a pre-algebra/geometry student for 2 years.

I find tutoring rewarding as it gives me an opportunity to meet an individual student where they are and take them to the next level of understanding. I love being able to take the time to find what works for each student.

When talking about math, I have worked with Big Ideas, Bob Jones Math, Go! Math, Everyday Math, and Engage NY curricula in my 10+ years of teaching. I also spent some time tutoring a student who was using the Singapore Math program. With each curriculum, a variety of sets of vocabulary and ways of explaining concepts was used. I am able to take pieces of each as well as personal life experiences to explain concepts to struggling students.

I have secured a variety of resources to aid in reading comprehension and writing tutoring but have used primarily novel studies, Purposeful Design (Christian school), and Pearson in my classroom teaching.

I am looking forward to building a tutoring business that meets the needs of local struggling students. I am moving away from classroom teaching to make tutoring more feasible. I can't wait to meet you and help you

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Sarah is absolutely fantastic with my daughters. She is currently tutoring my 4th grader on reading comprehension and my 2nd grader with math. She is so patient and kind. I needed someone who could give my daughters helpful skills and knowledge in the areas they are struggling in, along with the confidence to want to learn more. I highly recommend Sarah B., she is a great fit for our daughters!

Patient and thorough instructor

Sarah has recently began working with my middle school son for math. He has never had a tutor before and was apprehensive. Within their first lesson she was able to put him at ease and he is simply thrilled to be working with her. So pleased!!!

She "gets me"

Reilly says that "Sarah gets me" and knows how to walk me through the lesson rather than overwhelming me. "I feel like I did great at math today!"
