As someone who loves a challenge, I have spent over 20 years helping students find joy in learning even the most daunting subjects. As someone who loves a challenge, I have spent over 20 years helping students find joy in learning even the most daunting subjects. Whether we are studying the calculus of integration by parts, or the physics of how to draw a free body diagram for a block sliding down a ramp, I am adept at making sure my students experience the thrill of success and understanding. With me as guide, and then coach, and then cheerleader, my students become independent thinkers, capable of problem solving in novel situations, all on their own. And we have a great time along the way!

My love of math and physics runs deep. I have a BA in Mathematics from Carleton College, and an MS in Physics from California State University, Northridge (as well as an MFA from NYU Tisch! which makes me super fun, obv). I just can't stop learning math, often reading advanced textbooks for fun. I'm now enrolled in the Applied Math MS at CSUN, because duh, why not? I'm always adding to what I know about math and seeking comfort and truth in logical reasoning.

Similarly, my experience teaching and tutoring is deep. I've tutored for companies and privately in both NYC and LA for over 15 years, coaching many students to perfect SAT and ACT scores, 5s on AP Calculus and AP Physics exams, and many more to straight As in math and physics classes. I've even taught a quarter of public HS in Los Angeles, and am working on obtaining my CA Teaching Credential. The feedback I get from my students is consistently stellar, and when it isn't, I use the criticism to improve what I'm doing. Education has changed a lot in the last few years, and I am excited by the new opportunities and insights into how students learn best.

Most importantly, I don't take myself or life too seriously. I love a good game, a good puzzle, and a good cup of coffee. I learn from my students as much as they learn from me, and I love watching them succeed.

Let's meet!

Calculus,

Calculus

As a Calculus tutor with over 12 years of experience tutoring Honors, AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC at public and private schools in both Los Angeles and NYC, I have seen just about every kind of calculus problem, and had the joy of working with just about every kind of student. There are many different ways to approach the problem solving Calculus requires, and I am particularly expert in meeting students where they are, and building on the skills they already possess. Together, we work efficiently (and enjoyably!) to a thorough understanding of derivatives, integrals, and their many variations and applications. I take great pride in seeing my students succeed, and I do it with as much wit and camaraderie as possible - I just think Calculus is the best, and really enjoy talking and thinking about it!
Physics,

Physics

I've been tutoring Physics at the AP level, both algebra and calculus based, for about 4 years now, and the more I help students unwind tough questions and work their way toward those satisfying (correct!) answers, the more interested in the subject I become. Every student and every class brings a slightly different approach, but the physics underlying each problem stays the same, and finding a way to illuminate these sometimes counter-intuitive ideas for my students has become one of my greatest joys. Seeing my physics students understand and appreciate this discipline is extremely rewarding; hearing about their excellent grades and tip-top scores on tests is pretty awesome too.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

Having not only taught but also taken and aced the SAT many, many times, I know from personal experience what it takes to get a high score. As a compassionate and entertaining test-prep mentor and guide, I ensure that students have the four most important things they need to succeed on test day: mastery of math content, mastery of test-taking strategies, the right kind of practice, and the right test-taking attitude. As a result of working with me, many of my students have achieved perfect or near-perfect scores on every section of the SAT, and that fills me with joy. But I am nearly as happy when I make a student laugh in the middle of solving a complex rational equation. THAT is quite an accomplishment - especially when you solve the equation correctly. If you're looking for an expert guide to help you do your absolute best on test day, and you want someone who can make the journey maybe, even, fun - let's meet!

Absolutely the best tutor ever!

Jocelyn is a remarkable tutor in every way. She is effective, inspirational, makes her sessions fascinating. She is smart enough to know when a kid is coasting and calls them on it, in a very lighthearted way. She is smart as a whip. She is filled with positive energy and finally gets superb results. I have two kids who were tutored simultaneously for the SAT and ACT tests. They could not be more different in their strengths, weaknesses and learning styles, yet Jocelyn helped them make huge strides in their scores and more important, their understanding of how to approach tests.

Amazing tutor!

We love all that she is doing for Nick. He has been on the Honors roll twice now that we are working with her.

Outstanding tutor

Jocelyn is really able to ascertain exactly what skills the student needs to hone as well as what personality traits or behavior could be impeding his/her success. She makes the sessions enjoyable (I often hear them Jocelyn and my daughter laughing together) and my daughter is really progressing. As an educator myself, I firmly believe you cannot go wrong with Jocelyn as a tutor for any subject she offers. Thank you Jocelyn.

Jocelyn engaged my son even when he was a little ill.

My son is smart meaning gets A's - we got him a tutor because he gets behind in class lessons when he misses school with asthma. Today after my son had missed almost a week of school Jocelyn gave him the confidence to get back to class without that overwhelming feeling of being behind. And she did it in one hour. And they were laughing - best tutor ever. Thank you Jocelyn.

Jocelyn makes studying fun!

Jocelyn's energy, enthusiasm and patience are only matched by how highly versed she is in all academic areas from SAT - ACT - and all the most difficult AP and honors classes! She is a pure pleasure!!!

Uplifting Personality! Warm and Compassionate Nature! Creative and Dependable Tutor!

I am very fortunate to have found Jocelyn. She has helped me tremendously through tutoring me in math, as well as reading and reviewing my screenplay. From the start, Jocelyn has been proactive in her communications with me whether by phone, email, or in person, she has cultivated a trustworthy and dependable relationship that is the foundation of our rapport. Jocelyn’s concern for my enthusiasm and connection during our tutoring sessions is always apparent. If we are working on math and I switch to writing, her spontaneous and imaginative personality kicks into gear, and she powers forward. I am absolutely positive that my being successful in math and writing means a great deal to Jocelyn, as does the success of all those whom she tutors. Jocelyn is accessible, relatable, and reliable. She posses an amazing talent in understanding the “why” to which a student struggles with math. Her nurturing patience has guided me to a renewed perspective on math, and a deeper insight into my own connections with math. She has a knack for relating mathematical equations to real world possibilities, thereby providing a basis to substantiate learning and to promote a personal, profound and lasting comprehension of the material. Jocelyn has that special combination of sensitivity to those who require a more thorough explanation and the drive and insight to propel the learner far beyond their expectations. It has been a pleasurable experience to have a tutor whose exceptional knowledge of math does not inhibit her from relating to someone like myself who suffers from anxiety in learning math. Jocelyn is well educated, yet still able to effectively communicate the material and to appreciate the many levels at which we all learn. Her creative approach in helping one gain an understanding of math makes learning fun and exciting. I look forward to experiencing growth through each of our tutoring sessions. Jocelyn is brilliant and encouraging in her style of teaching, her thoughtful and considerate nature builds confidence and empowers the learner, and her sense of responsibility and honesty makes her a rare find.

Excellent!

She is great. Our son, J.J., thinks she is really good and helpful to him. I am his mom and I think she is fantastic. Very responsive by e-mail or phone and always very flexible with her schedule.

Great Skills for Already-High SAT Scorers!

Jocelyn is very smart, and has great teaching methods and test-taking tips for the student who is just trying to get a slightly higher score on the SATs - no easy feat when you are already have near-perfect scores. Our student had taken the SAT only once, spring of junior year. For most competitive colleges the resulting score was better than fine. But for one or two particularly competitive schools in the area of math and science, we were advised that a slight boost of the math score would be advisable. This was accomplished, along with getting a perfect score in the Critical Reading section! My student only saw Jocelyn a couple of times in the ten days before the SAT second-taking. But confidence was gained, more focus on remembering math skills that were learned over five years ago occurred, and Jocelyn provided a warm, caring role model for the soon-to-be college student! We didn't have experience in her having to teach the basics of the subject area - but rather to remember what had previously been mastered at a high level. But I'm guessing that she would be great in the "teaching" mode as well! Really a pleasure to have around, from a parent's standpoint, as well! We would highly recommend Jocelyn!

Amazing breadth of knowledge and ability to teach

Jocelyn's understanding of difficult subjects is amazing in itself. Even more amazing is her ability to help others understand difficult subjects with wit, making every lesson fun and interesting.

Precisely pick!

My son has raised his SAT score after taking a few lessons with Ms. Jocelyn. She picked his drawback points effectively. He listened her pointings to correct his weak points and achieved the score that he wanted.
