Greetings! My name is Christopher R. I am currently a PhD candidate in philosophy at University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. I have an MA in philosophy from the same school. I have over nine years of teaching experience in academia and ten years of experience as a vocal coach. I have tutored adults of various ages in writing, English and philosophy and have taught philosophy to undergraduates at University of Dallas. I have also taught language arts, drama, voice and social studies to youth spanning from grades 2 through 8 at St. John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

My areas of expertise in philosophy include Plato, Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant, and Edmund Husserl. I have taught the phenomenology of Husserl to undergraduates at University of Dallas. My coursework in the history of philosophy has spanned from the Pre-Socratics through contemporary philosophers. I have taken classes on metaphysics, history of philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and phenomenology.

My teaching methodology encompasses using creative examples from anything from the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and J.R.R. Tolkien to my work on a framing crew. I believe that structure is very important for an effective learning environment, but I also have found that occasional spontaneity is helpful. I do not think that learning should be reserved to reading and writing--although they are indispensable elements of it--but that it should extend to our experiences in the everyday world. Thus, I encourage my students to take occasional breaks from their studies and get outdoors to learn from the beauty of nature or to partake of tasks that go beyond the classroom like volunteering at a soup kitchen or learning how to run a small business. I believe that a great education must inform the whole human person and not just teach him particular skills.

However, I have strong competency in many other subjects, including singing, drama, theology, Bible studies and French.

Reading

Reading

+JMJ I have been a passionate and dedicated reader since I was about six or seven years old where I launched off into reading the Nate the Great series. Soon after I was reading the Boxcar children and the Chronicles of Narnia and had read through The Hobbit by age eight. Since that time, examples of the my wide array of my reading now include: Kant's Critique of Pure and Critique of Judgment, Husserl's Logical Investigations, The Brothers Karamazov, The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, Chesterton's The Everlasting Man, C.S. Lewis's works of apologetics and Walden. Now working on my PhD, reading has continued to prove a great boon to my success.

+JMJ I typically explain the method for writing an essay as follows: The introductory paragraph states the thesis and the topics of the essay's body. After this, all the succeeding paragraphs following the introduction must point back to the introduction as a reference point. Finally, the concluding paragraph must reiterate what was said in the introduction and add new insight based on what was elaborated on in the body. I find that this simple technique works very well for me. Yet I also believe that it opens the door to creativity by virtue of its simplicity.

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

At Catholic University of America, where I obtained my degree in philosophy, I took four classes in theology, including 'The Letters of St. Paul' and 'Introduction to Christian Political Thought.' I have read many theological texts extensively, including Sacred Scripture and works by St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Francis De Sales, St. Therese of Lisieux, and John Calvin. I have experienced how philosophy is an excellent companion to theology, as it helps one to grasp difficult concepts presented in theology and to explain them with greater simplicity and with the assistance of logic. I have given theological/philosophical talks to children and young adults at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Camp on prayer and on the immorality of physician-assisted suicide.
Philosophy

Philosophy

My philosophical strengths include ancient Greek philosophy, virtue ethics, medieval philosophy, St. Thomas Aquinas, metaphysics, phenomenology, Kant, Husserl, and Heidegger. In my dissertation, I plan to explore connections between classical metaphysics and phenomenology. I am currently finishing my fifth year in the philosophy PhD program at University of Dallas. At UD I have taught "The Philosophy of Being," a metaphysics class, and "The Seven Arts of Language," a logic and rhetoric class. I earned a Master's in philosophy from University of Dallas and a BA in philosophy from The Catholic University of America.

Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

Singing has been a big part of my life (and an immensely enjoyable part at that!) since I was about ten years old when I starred in my first community theatre production as Michael Darling in "Peter Pan." By the time I was sixteen years old, I had performed in over fifteen theatre productions, including "Scrooge the Musical" and "Fiddler on the Roof," and I was anticipating auditioning for a student production of "Les Miserables." This audition had prompted me to begin taking classical voice lessons with a professional mezzo-soprano from Brooklyn, and I ended up performing the role of Monsieur Thenardier ('Master of the House'.) From there, my venture in classical music in the baritone voice took off, and, since then, I have sung in voice juries, voice competitions, churches and other performance venues (which do not include churches) in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and San Francisco.

Excellent teacher and great communicator! 10/10 recommend!

I have been working with Christopher for over a month now and my experience has been exceptional. I am very grateful for Christopher’s ability to communicate complex material in a simple and relatable way. Christopher has always been well prepared for all of our meetings. Today, however, I was nervous because I did not give him a chance to prepare for the questions I intended to ask. Frankly, it was out of the box from our previous meetings. Needless to say, Christopher met the challenge and I had a lot of fun discussing Evelyn De Morgan’s “Soul in Hell” painting with him. Christopher continues to help me shape my project and his insight into Aristotelian thought is fruitful and impressive. While I am a notoriously slow and easily confused student, Christopher has an ability to meet me on a level playing field. That is, he communicates in way that is relatable for an average Joe like myself to be able to grapple with and enrich my own understandings of the material. Sometimes this requires Christopher to draw from scratch, others to make references to current culture. Either way, the guy makes it fun to learn! I have very much enjoyed my time with this tutor. Anyone looking for a tutor should absolutely consider Christopher.

Helpful and knowledgeable tutor

Christopher helped with my understanding of medieval philosophy. We were able to cover several subjects in our sessions, and he helped me to better understand the philosophers we covered and how they thought about certain topic and issues. His method of tutoring is relatable and is able to put difficult topics in a understandable manner.
