Hello! I am Noel, a retired elementary educator, who taught for 34 years! I spent many years teaching kindergarten, which is where I learned to value and understand the developmental processes involved in learning about numbers/numeracy. This led me to incorporate activities that would help students bridge between levels and grow in their mathematical understandings. The results were obvious in county-wide "norming" data collection, which showed my students were well above the rest of the county. As a result, I was asked to become the school's "Math Coach and Interventionist." In this role, I worked with struggling math students to help them prepare for state testing. After COVID hit, that position was dissolved and I became the 4th grade math teacher, and taught every 4th grader in our school. It bothered me that students were being pushed to maintain pre-COVID expectations, whether or not they were ready. I much preferred to meet students where they are in their learning, and help them grow from there. This is what eventually convinced me to retire and to tutor privately.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction of STEM. Additionally, I am certified as a Gifted instructor K-12. In spring of 2014, the year of the norming mentioned previously, my then Assistant Superintendent nominated me for The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. I did not receive the award, but the nomination was an honor and a great experience.
I have worked with many students who struggle in math, and also with many who needed acceleration and challenge, above grade level work. I do my tutoring online, through ZOOM, so that I can keep my schedule full and attend to as many students as possible. Let me know if you have any questions!! I look forward to meeting and getting to know your child.
