Hi there! I'm Jessica, and I'm thrilled to offer tutoring services for middle school, high school, and college students. I specialize in the humanities, college essays, history, literature, college prep, SAT prep, beginner's violin, and all things writing. I recently graduated from Stanford with honors degrees in History and Philosophy, where I was lucky enough to work as a teacher for Stanford's residential humanities program. There I worked both remotely and in person with high school juniors, crafting and executing lesson plans, building and refining essays, and, most importantly, seeding passion. This work was profoundly fulfilling, and it inspires me to continue teaching in the humanities.

For the last five years, I have worked on a voluntary basis building and refining college application essays (including personal statements for medical school). Students I have tutored through the common app have been accepted to the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, UCLA and Northwestern, among other wonderful universities. Until now I have provided tutoring services without charge, and I am passionate about equity and accessibility. For this reason, my prices are highly negotiable for low income students.

Classics

I was invited by a former philosophy professor at Stanford to teach for a residential humanities program, which targeted ambitious students from local high schools. My work involved crafting and executing lesson plans in philosophy, history, and classics; working through challenging historical, literary and philosophical texts; building motivation and curiosity; and assisting with interpretative writing assignments.

Music

Violin

Violin

I have been playing violin since the third grade. I have received the highest possible NYSSMA score 5 years in a row, I was chosen to perform in chamber, district and county orchestras, and I have always floated between the first and third stand of the first violins. Throughout high school I tutored beginner violinists on a volunteer basis, as part of my service to the Musical Honors Society.

Other

College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked for 5 years helping high school students craft personal statements and supplemental essays for their college applications. This work begins with brainstorming ideas: what will you write about, and why? How will you write about it, and why? I follow applicants through their drafts, and at the end of the process I'll help refine a final, polished essay.
