I have been a teacher and tutor for more than 20 years.

Today, I am an Instructional Aide at Harriton High School, and assist special education and regular students daily in all subjects: math, physics, chemistry, English, history, writing. As such, I am familiar with course content, assessments, standardized testing, ACT, SAT, PSAT, PSSA, and the Keystone. Additionally, I tutor college level courses in physics, mathematics, and English Language Learners (ELL): my students have been from Republic of Georgia, Italy, Mexico, Honduras, China, and Nepal.

My first career was in business as a Vice President, consultant, and trainer. During this time, I taught Business Management at the University of Wisconsin and Chestnut Hill College. I hold BS, MS, and MBA degrees. After completing a 3-year certificate in Gestalt Psychotherapy, I am a trainer in communications and motivation. I often use these skills to mediate between parents and students to get commitment to study and goals.

I describe my tutoring style as: patient, focused on reducing anxiety, willing to explain in small steps to build confidence/competence, and then working to master the content.

Student focus is essential! I have high expectations of student effort. It's up to the student to cut back on Facebook, Twitter, social media, computer games, TV, and put in the time studying! I can't do it alone! Parents must be involved in this effort. Hard work pays off!

My wife, Maureen, and I have spent summers in the Himalayas teaching English and art. The photo is me at a Buddhist School in Jharkot, Nepal.

I served as a Lieutenant with the US Army 8th Special Forces in Latin America building schools and water supplies, and am proud of my service.

I have tutored English Language Learners (ELL) for over 10 years. I received training and certification from the Delaware County Literacy Council, and worked through the DCLC as a volunteer. I am a contractor with an England based firm to tutor clients in the US. I had long term corporate assignments teaching groups from Latin America, an Ecuadorian production foreman, and a family from Italy. I am an Instructional Aide, Autistic Support, at the Lower Merion School District. At Harriton High School I tutor ELL in English, Math, and Chemistry. I have tutored high school students in English and other subjects: a senior woman from the Republic of Georgia, and freshman males from Taiwan, Mexico, China. Summer 2011 I completed a 30 hour English Language Learner Symposium at the Chester County Intermediate Unit. Additionally I complete 20 hours each year to teach the learning disabled. I am conversational in Spanish. As an Army Lieutenant with the 8th Special Forces I completed a 3 month Spanish Language training, and was assigned to Ecuador for 8 months. I experienced and know the stress of learning a new language and living in a foreign culture. I spent the summers of 2010 and 2012 in Nepal teaching English to Tibetan students and monks at monastery schools. In addition to BS, MS, and MBA degrees, I have a 3 year training in Gestalt psychotherapy from Pennsylvania Gestalt. I often use techniques from this training to assist students to overcome barriers to growth and a new language.

I find that many students have forgotten the basic concepts behind each problem. My approach to review basic concepts behind each math problem so that variations of the same problem will be recognized, and solved. SAT/ACT Math: just as important as knowing the content, is having a strategy to complete these sections. When to do a problem, when not to. When to guess, when not to. Know the penalties for wrong answers. My personal notes will help the student master the basics, then expand to harder problems. It's not necessary to do all the problems, but you MUST get the easy and intermediate ones right!

Grammar, spelling, important. Please, no grade-school vocabulary: good, happy, big, etc.! I expect the student to write at least 2 essays per week for correction. Hard work pays off!

Knowledgeable and fun geometry tutor

Peter helped my son prepare for his final in geometry. He was able to find his weak areas and work through them while giving him confidence in his strengths. He also gave James some excellent (and humorous) life tips. Thank you Peter

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Peter tutored my daughter in AP Physics. He was very knowledgeable about the subject, and provided clear explanations of how to solve various types of Physics problems. He drew diagrams and provided "take home" examples so that she could refer to them when necessary. He was patient, friendly, and a "lifesaver" for her. She just earned an "A" on her midterm. I would highly recommend him.

Terrific tutor

So glad we found Peter- he and my daughter were able tackle the work she needed to learn and he has been amazingly supportive of her since. So happy to have found such a terrific tutor and kind person to work with her.

Knowledgeable and easy to understand

I am a junior at Temple and needed help with Statistics. Peter provided clear explanations of the concepts and solutions to problems. I emailed tests and homework to him in advance, and he brought written solutions to our meetings which I kept for study. He also provided outlines on how to use the TI calculator to solve problems quickly, avoiding use of complicated tables. Highly recommended.

Patent and is a good listener.

He's always on time and very considerate to the student. Also knows his material. And tries to go above and beyond helping the student through other resources.

Peter's help is invaluable

Peter patiently listened to my concerns and then systematically showed me important concepts so that I could grasp the illusive basics of statistics.

Thorough and patient tutor

Peter was a great help in reviewing and refreshing math skills. He provided steady, patient guidance. And he was always here on time, ready to go. We look forward to using him again once the school year begins.

Focused, highly competent tutor

Peter tutored our sophomore in Algebra 2 Honors. Peter was always on time and prepared. He was flexible in his approach, helping with whatever was needed that week: particular lessons/sections, homework, test corrections, and exam prep and review. His familiarity with the high school and the teaching staff there was a great asset. Communication with Peter was excellent: he was always reachable by e-mail or phone, and he provided weekly summaries of what was covered in each tutoring session, and also made recommendations about learning strategies and additional efforts required by our child. Importantly, our child got along well with Peter, and his calm and professional demeanor was always conducive to a productive tutoring session. I would definitely recommend Peter H. for high school math tutoring.
