I create personalized learning plans for home school students and LOVE seeing students succeed. My main goal is for students to have strong self-esteem and be confident learners. I accomplish this by creating a part-time or full-time home school program based on their needs and interests. I choose the best resources that help simplify the concepts and make learning fun. I am state certified in gifted, bilingual and regular education, hold a master's degree in education and have been teaching for 38 years.

Piano,

Piano

You or your child will learn piano technique and songs, music theory, sight reading, ear training, and music appreciation, which includes exposure to excellent piano pieces. Having taught for many years, I have found the best schedule is to have lessons three times per week. This schedule gives more accountability to the student, so they keep up with their practice daily. It also allows me to catch any errors, so they do not continue to practice a piece incorrectly. I usually recommend 30-minute lessons for beginners and intermediate students and one hour for advanced students. Using the best resources and leveled books, I personalize the lessons to the level of each student. I studied piano for 14 years from childhood until a few years after college. This included studying piano in college, which was the equivalent of a minor in piano. My master's degree is in education, and I have taught for 40 years. Through the years, I have taught both elementary music and given private piano lessons for 12 years.

Special Needs

Dyslexia

Dyslexia

In my 40 years of teaching, I have taught many students with dyslexia. I personalize each child’s learning plan based on their academic needs, interest, personality, and educational background. My goal is to build their self-confidence. I have them start at their current level so it is easy and they can see immediate success. Dramatizing the vocabulary words and bingo and flash card games help students retain the words at a faster rate. I use a variety of reading materials such as workbooks, magazines, almanacs, e-books, and regular books. Authentic reading such as reading a map, a grocery list, a chart, etc. all help keep their interest and increase their comprehension. Short reading passages with several questions, cloze reading, and reading that gives evaluation questions covering several skills at once such as main idea, vocabulary, sequencing, etc. all aid their comprehension. I use Visual Memory Games with younger and older students which help them in all subject areas. Read Aloud books also help them to enjoy reading. I am certified in gifted education and I believe exposing them to above-level material with my guidance increases their confidence. I am also a piano teacher and I believe that music is a key to helping the student with dyslexia. Research has shown that music strengthens the visual and auditory areas of your brain which are connected to speech and reading.

Experienced, Knowledgeable And Very Likeable Tutor

Rosemary is an excellent teacher. She is extremely knowledgeable about children, education and processes that work and keep even young children engaged and learning. What amazes me is how she can still deliver this virtually and make her classes fun for the child. If you can get a slot, book her and see for yourself - she's a gem!

Experienced, Kind and Caring

Ms. Lucas is a dedicated teacher who cares about her students. She spent time talking with me prior to meeting my grandson to learn about him and his needs. She met with my grandson via Zoom and was able to quickly assess his strengths and where he needed extra attention. She then created a curriculum just for him. She gave me guidance as to how I could help my grandson to best learn from home. I highly recommend Mrs. Lucas if you are looking for a teacher who will take a special interest in your student. She takes great pride in the success of her students.

Knowledgeable and patient.

Mrs. Lucas has been instrumental in bringing our fourth grader up to speed on math fundamentals that get missed in school. The addition of her skills for our daughter has made homeschooling a much better experience.

Experienced, thorough and patient tutor

Ms. Rosemary is a very experience tutor. Her 39-year experience does make big difference. She built a customized plan for my 4-year old son based on the initial assessment. Her lesson is vivid, thorough and well balanced with different areas. More importantly, she listens to us and is willing to adjust the learning plan to meet our needs. We already had more than 10 lessons with her. And the journey will continue.
