About me and my approach:
My passion for teaching and learning go back as far as I can remember. Playtime in my young life centered on meaningful learning where toys became objects to explore, examine, and manipulate, in the process of learning. These early learning adventures with my parents carried forth to my interaction with playmates, friends, and relatives. There was always something new to learn and I seemed to always be in a teaching mode, sharing with those around me in our efforts to learn more about the world around us. From these early activities, it was noticeable that my interest and natural ability in Mathematics and Science were beginning to surface. Of equal importance, I figured out how I learned best and how to engage others so that they would learn most effectively as well.
Later, my undergraduate and graduate study at three prestigious universities furthered my quest for learning. For my undergraduate study at the University of Wisconsin, I chose History as my major. Then, I went to the University of Michigan Law School. Following these two degrees, I believed that there was still more that I wanted to learn about History, and this led to obtaining a Ph.D. degree in U.S. History, from the University of North Carolina. These degrees and my projects thereafter were financed primarily by tutoring middle school, high school, and college students in mathematics and science, subjects that have continued to be my areas of natural ability and interest. Even today, the research which led to the Ph.D. has also encouraged me to continue to examine and learn more about these two areas of study. Overall, subjects that I have experience and skill in teaching and building students' competency through tutoring are Mathemat

I grew up in a teachers' household, and organization was always a priority. I learned that succeeding in school was not only a matter of working hard; it was also a matter of working smart: efficient use of time and intelligent allocation of resources. I applied these principles to get through Law School and through a Ph.D. program, in U.S. History. My training in History has given me insights into being resourceful when performing research, problem solving, and troubleshooting. Also, teaching English as a Second Language has prepared me to teach effective study skills. Many ESL students are from poor backgrounds, and have to work a lot just to make ends meet. Often, they do not have time to commit to doing a lot of homework and preparation outside the classroom and they just have to make do with the time they do have. I have learned to maximize their learning given the time constraints they are under. It is always great to have enough time to get ready for a test, but with the rigors of school, sometimes you need to be able to do well even if you don't have enough time. I am an expert in getting the most out whatever situation the student finds themselves in.
