I am certified to teach ESL by the state of Illinois. This certification is attained by completing state requirements, which include specific college-level coursework, including various teaching methods and culture classes; in addition, the state requires one year of verified ESL contact hours. I currently teach ESL students at the secondary level. Last year (2009-2010) I taught ESL Language Arts, not as pull-out program, but in a classroom with ESL students exclusively. I am very proud that all of my students passed the ACCESS test and were exited from the program, although the state increased its exiting score in January from 4.0 to 4.9.
