Whether I am teaching trumpet, music theory, ear training, sight singing or conducting, I always emphasize that I am teaching music.

As a public school music teacher for over thirty years, I know that students learn in different ways. I consider myself to be a patient, yet an encouraging, educator. Whether you are studying for the AP Music Theory test or preparing for a region audition or a college audition, I can help you plan out your remaining time to use it most effectively. I also...

I also have many textbooks and materials available to assist in instruction.

I also have a solid math background if you need assistance with basic math, algebra, geometry or trigonometry. Again, I can help explain concepts in different ways to assist different style learners.

I know that life can be busy at times. I can come to your home for instruction if that more convenient.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

As a highly qualified teacher of Music Theory and AP Music Theory for many years in high schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey, I have incorporated ear training as an integral part of comprehensive musicianship. I use many examples from the classic and contemporary cultures to reinforce concepts of harmonic and melodic intervallic content, triad and seventh chord recognition and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic dictation to demonstrate verbally and on paper what a student hears. Singing, is an essential part of that training.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

I work with music theory as a private tutor and multi-level theory classes, including fundamentals, basic theory and AP level classes.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

As a highly qualified teacher of Music Theory and AP Music Theory for many years in high schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey, I have incorporated sight singing as an integral part of comprehensive musicianship. Singing in this situation is not to be seen as an American Idol performance, rather the only way that one can demonstrate what the student hears internally. Beginning with the establishment of a tonal center and proceeding to simple melodic intervals, we work on the challenge of hearing a pitch first before incorporating the rhythmic aspect of sight singing.
Trumpet

Trumpet

As a professional trumpet player in Boston and New Jersey for the last 30 years, I have also taught many private and small group lessons including this summer in Oceanport. I have taught all band instruments in high schools and middle schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey. With private lessons, we work on good playing habits from the beginning: correct mouthpiece placement and embouchure, proper breath support and posture. Instruction will include some singing to demonstrate what a student hears internally before producing a sound. Lessons will include the technical aspect of playing as well as the joy of making music in many different styles.
