I have played saxophone, clarinet, and flute for over 30 years and have performed in jazz ensembles, orchestras, rock and pop bands, and musical theatre. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Jazz Composition and Performance from Berklee College of Music, graduating with a 3.72 GPA. Upon graduation I worked for several years as a professional performer on cruise ships, playing saxophones, flute, and clarinet, and also took on a role as musical director during one of my contracts.
I moved to Los Angeles after my last cruise ship contract to work in the film and television industry as a composer. I have scored multiple short films, one feature film, and an award-winning documentary. In my composing role, I have worked a great deal, not only in composing but also in music production, having worked with multiple software applications and in several musical genres.
Throughout my professional career, I have also taught private music instruction on saxophone, flute, and clarinet to students ranging from middle school age through adult. I have also tutored adults in music production, composition, and theory. I feel it's important to tailor instruction to suit the student. Not all students learn the same way, and this is also true depending on the age of the student. I try to inspire my students to learn as much as they can and want to. I find music not only helps students expand their creativity but also aids in learning that applies to other subjects. Many studies show involvement in the arts improves grades and learning overall, so I hope I can be at least a small part of that improvement.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have worked as composer for film for over 10 years, having scored numerous short films, one feature length film and an award winning documentary. I've worked on comedies, dramas, sci-fi and suspense films, having written orchestral, jazz and electronic music. I've composed and released two game music albums within that past year. One was an orchestral album inspired by fantasy RPG games and the other was an all electronic album inspired by space adventure games. I'll some be releasing my 3rd album, consisting of a combination of modern and 8-bit instruments, and inspired by 8-bit adventure games.

Music Production

Music Production

As a freelance composer for film and games, part of my job is doing most, if not all, of the music production. For any project I've worked on over the past 10 years, I've not only composed the music, but orchestrated it, programmed the MIDI, recorded any live instruments and mixed/mastered it. I've worked in Cubase Pro, Logic Pro and Pro Tools while creating the music for all my projects and am familiar with recording audio, programming MIDI and using a vast array of virtual instruments and effects plugins.

Mike is an expert in this subject. Very clear in theory and practical analysis . Would go with him more regularly for sure!

Knowledge and diligence

Mike helped me set up an older recoeding system which can be quite challenging but he held in there and was quick to research when we ran into some snags. We continue to work on getting my system working. I'm sure he will figure it out and get it sorted out with one more session. He is very easy to work with.

Very professional and systemically sound.

The scale structure he laid out will help me organize the patterns I need to express my thoughts in the melody and improvision. I look forward to many other similar lessons that will help me build a library of harmonic expressions.

Great lesson

Not only did Mike go over what I needed, he did it in a great fashion. Taught but didn't make me feel stupid with any of my obvious questions. I look forward to having follow up lessons with him as new and potentially even dumber questions come to light.
