I am a speech-language pathologist with 25 years of experience in helping students reach their full potential. My passion and talent is assisting students in developing the necessary strategies to allow them to shine as scholars. For the past seven years I have specialized in language and literacy. In addition to the in-depth knowledge in language development gained while studying and practicing as an SLP, I have received training in Orton-Gillingham through the Institute for Multisensory Education. In addition to the Orton Gillingham approach, I have numerous hours of training in Structured Word Inquiry through WordWorks Kingston, Lex, and Real Spelling. Using an SWI approach with my students allows for a richer understanding of words and their spellings than when using Orton-Gillingham in isolation.

I believe that no student wants to be the trouble-maker/class-clown/lazy kid/etc. I believe these students adopt these roles as an alternative to feeling shame amongst their peers when their learning style does not fit the instruction style. My passion and talent is assisting students in developing strategies to aid in comprehending what is being taught and finding their best mode for expressing what they understand. I believe in teaching strategies over content so the student has tools that will last a lifetime rather than one class period. What I hear frequently from my students when I work with them is, “How come no one told me that?”

Reading,

Reading

Reading is more than just decoding which I am qualified to teach as an SLP and as both an O-G and Structured Word Inquiry trained reading interventionist. Reading is also about comprehension which causes so many students to struggle. I use an approach called Notice and Note developed by Beers & Probst. It guides the student to look for 6 types of clues, ask questions pertaining to the clues, and answer the questions they develop for themselves about themes, character development, plot development, etc. It makes short work of the scary questions teachers and tests ask about literature. The student learns to guide their own reading rather than a teacher.
Spelling,

Spelling

I teach students how to look at spelling beyond "just sound it out" and why one way of spelling a word is preferred over an alternate way of spelling a word by looking at meaning and structure. I give students the knowledge to perform their own spelling investigations independently. I teach students how to make sense of spelling lists and teach a one week, 1 hour/day spelling crash course.

Dyslexia

I am trained in Orton-Gillingham through the Institute for Multisensory Learning. O-G is geared toward teaching a student with dyslexia to read using a structured, sequential, multi-sensory approach. In addition, I use a Structured Word Inquiry approach which teaches a student to dive beyond phonics and deeper into a word's true structure. This often makes more sense to the dyslexic student helping with words that can't be "sounded out."

Best of the Best

My daughter started working with Dulcie 7 months ago. We were both impressed with Dulcie's knowledge of teaching the concepts to meet my daughter's needs. On day one, Dulcie came with curriculum and a plan for how to teach my daughter over time. while meeting her immediate needs for school. Her framework has been exceptional. Beyond that, she was able to quickly build a rapport with a youngster that doesn't warm up to strangers quickly. Overall, we just think Dulcie is the best!

Thank you, Erin! I appreciate your noticing my preparation and knowledge. Working with your daughter brings joy to my day. It is so helpful as a tutor when a student is diligent in her work. She makes me look good!

Dulcie is kind and patient!

My daughter is struggling with her dyslexia but I am confident Dulcie is teaching her methods to build her confidence. She has gone out of her way to work around our busy schedule. I highly recommend her if you or your child is in need of a reading tutor.

Thank you so much for your kind words and your confidence in the teaching methods I employ. It is always great to have methods I am passionate about that help students improve their reading skills. Your daughter is a joy to work with! I look forward to our continued work together.

Excellent, patient tutor

Dulcie works with my seven-year-old daughter on a variety of reading foundations and my daughter (who generally refuses to practice) excitedly gets online each Saturday morning to meet with Dulcie. I originally questioned the value of online tutoring, however, it's helped introduce my daughters to using a screen and is so convenient. Dulcie is everything you would want in a tutor!!

Amazing tutor

Dulcie has been such an amazing and supportive tutor for our college-aged daughter who has dyslexia. She made the Dean’s List last semester and her confidence increase with reading and writing has been astronomical. Worth every penny. Thank you, Dulcie!

Thank you so much for the very gracious review! It is always so nice to hear how you have helped a person. Of course, I have to give credit back to you and your daughter. Together you created a great foundation for her success in college.

Wonderful tutor and real results!

Dulcie was an amazing tutor for my son! He looked forward to every session and she kept him engaged for the entire hour. She always had a lesson plan prepared and also incorporated my suggestions when I thought he needed to work on something. My son made enormous progress with her. I can't recommend her enough!

Makes the difficult subject fun.

My 7-year-old daughter, Tallulah, has been struggling with reading and was recently diagnosed with a reading disability. Tallulah has struggled with greatly with reading and spelling. She has been working with Dulcie for the last month and the change in Tallulah is amazing! Driving with Tallulah last night, she was reading all of the signs we passed. This is something she has never done before. Tallulah would even stop and explain how she knew part of the word, because of “something that Miss Dulcie explained.” Before working with Dulcie, Tallulah would often say things like “I don’t want to try to read” or “I can’t read.” Now, she is doing it on her own without any prompting. Tallulah also looks forward to their online meetings, which is so nice to see. I am so grateful that we found Dulcie. If you are looking for a tutor, I unreservedly recommend Dulcie.

Makes the difficult subject fun.

My 7-year-old daughter, Tallulah, has been struggling with reading and was recently diagnosed with a reading disability. Seeing Tallulah struggle with reading assignments and the remediation platform through her school is tough. She is miserable and there is often tears, no parent wants to see their child struggle so much. Tallulah was very apprehensive about having to do additional reading work on top of her remote schooling, but Dulcie made it so fun for her! Dulcie is wonderful! Tallulah is excited to work with her again and is already using some of the tools she learned from her first session. Seeing how Dulcie worked with Tallulah today gave me great hope that Tallulah will

Extremely knowledgeable

Dulcie is amazing. My son loves working with her and gets upset when it's time for the lesson to end. She makes the lessons fun and exciting integrating the schools work with her own spin.
