About Seth

Bio

The first thing to tell is that I have been teaching Middle School since 1989. I have taught in rural, urban, and suburban schools. I was a special educator for seven years, then a Social Studies teacher, and now I lead English and Civics classes. The mantra in my class is "dig deeper, try harder, be better".

The first thing to tell is that I have been teaching Middle School since 1989. I have taught in rural, urban, and suburban schools. I was a special educator for seven years, then a Social Studies teacher, and now I lead English and Civics classes. The mantra in my class is "dig deeper, try harder, be better".
For seven years in Vermont, during the summer, I facilitated Ropes Course Adventure programs which focus on team building, independence, problem solving, trust. Some reasons why I like tutoring someone is because I am very well organized, and very flexible. I can make a plan, yet think on my feet and revise plans for improvement. The idea of modeling those qualities, and giving that person the confidence to practice those skills, makes me feel confident thatI make a difference.

I am an excellent proofreader, and excellent reader for facts and inferences. I am very good idea of how to use vocabulary effectively and very good at knowing the audience.

I have many years of experience teaching American history from the Revolutionary War until Reconstruction, as well as many years of teaching World History from the Early Middle Ages to The Renaissance. Many years of teaching Civics. Since getting my masters degree, I have taken many courses in history, such as 20th Century History.

I have a master's degree in Special Education and much classroom experience with ADD students. Also, Ropes Adventure training is a great place to see these students in a different light, and understand their thought process better.

I teach grammar to my students in eighth grade, For example, we study subject/verb/pronoun agreement. It goes into greater depth than that, though. Along with studying participles, infinitives, and gerunds, we also learn to avoid sentence fragments and run-on sentences. But mainly we are looking at how to put a good sentence together, with proper agreement, correct use of part of speech, and appropriate punctuation. We also stress the value of writing in the active present tense when it comes to writing about literature.

I am an English teacher, and before that I taught Social Studies/History. There are a lot of essays assigned, which means a lot of reading/proofreading for me with each essay a student submits. I have to say that if there were another job I could do as a profession, proofreading would be easy for me; in all modesty, I am very good at it (just ask my colleagues; they come to me to find errors in their emails, before they send them out to whomever they are sending them out to).

I teach English, and have taught Social Studies/History. In both subjects you learn about the writing and writers of the time, plus the written works themselves. I was an English major in college, with a minor in History. Furthermore, I have taken many courses in literature that study plays and novels, often classics. Top that off with that I like reading and like movies that are based on literature.

I taught American history for many years to eighth graders. We studied the events from the Pilgrims to the Reconstruction. I have also taken many college courses in history, such at 20th century American History. Furthermore, I have taken courses in Literature that study novels, poems, and plays from Americans in all centuries. When studying this literature, you also learn about the history of the era, to put the literature in perspective. For example, when studying The Great Gatsby, you learn about the events, the cultures, and the different mindsets of the people of the time.

I have been teaching Civics to seventh grade students for many years. We learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, along with governmental structures and systems. For example, whenever an election year comes around, such as a presidential election, we study the election process in total. Also, when I teach American History, we spend much time on the Constitution, The Bill of Rights (and other amendments), and the judicial process.
