My experience includes 20 years as a faculty member at a medical school where I taught genetics to first year medical students and performed research in gene therapy. I also spent eight years as chair of an undergraduate department where I taught introductory biology, undergraduate and graduate genetics, and a graduate course that I developed in gene therapy. I have over 70 professional publications of which more than 50 are in the area of gene therapy including vector design, mechanisms of gene delivery, in vitro an in vivo models for gene therapy, and clinical trial outcomes. My expertise extends to topics including personalized medicine and translational medicine.

My experience teaching at the undergraduate and medical school levels resulted in a Rate-my-professor rating of 4.8/5 (5 evaluations). My medical school teaching resulted in receipt of a teaching award. My approach is to teach concepts using analogies to commonplace experiences and to avoid jargon and complex terms until the basic foundation of understanding has been established.

I can help biology and genetics students understand the logic underlying biological and genetic principles as well as providing help with study strategies to help with memorizing the very large biology vocabulary that must be mastered. I am particularly happy to assist students who are interested in learning about gene therapy for academic, professional, or personal reasons.

Having taught the course at the college level, I have a good idea which topics lend themselves to exam questions. I also know where common misconceptions can derail good students, so we can identify those topics and achieve a good understanding before the test. In addition, the fact that I am an active investigator will allow me to introduce you to the cutting edge of the field.

Genetics

I taught an undergraduate 400-level Genetics class for 4 years and currently am part of a team that teaches the genetics portion of the first-year curriculum at a medical school. I have published more than 70 papers, over 50 of which relate to mechanisms of gene delivery, viral and non-viral vector development, preclinical disease models, and analysis of data from clinical trials.
