I am a current student at Liberty University Online in the Bachelor of Science in Education Curriculum and am entering into my junior year with an overall GPA of 3.03, where I will graduate in December, 2011. I have four children, ages 28, 25, 21 and 17. All of them except the oldest child were "special" education children with learning disabilities. Two of them had ADHD with specific learning disabilities, and one of them just had specific learning disabilities. All of the oldest three children have graduated with the last two graduating on the A-B honor roll. I also have 3 grandchildren, ages 10, 3, and 2. I have been an advocate of theirs throughout their years in school. I also worked for two years as a substitute teacher, including one year at Lincoln County and one year at Rhea County schools in Tennessee.

I am now a substitute teacher with Jackson County Public Schools in Sylva, NC. I worked mostly with 4th and 5th grade students in Tennessee, doing tasks such as lesson planning and teaching and helping students to understand the lessons for the day. I really enjoyed this job. In Jackson County, NC, I've worked with high school students and found this both rewarding and interesting so much so that this played a major roll in my decision to return to school at my age to become a teacher. I did my internship at the child development center at Webster,NC where I gained a small amount of experience with pre-school aged children and a very special child with autism.

I worked as a substitute teacher for 2 years in elementary school in Tennessee in 2 different schools, both Rhea county and Lincoln county. I did lesson plans, teaching, and assisting the students understand the days lessons, along with assign homework each day. I mostly worked with 4th and 5th grade students, but was also assigned spots with other grades as well. I enjoyed doing this so much, it had a major bearing on my decision to go on to college to major in education at such a late stage in my life. This is so rewarding when you see the look on their faces when they succeed.

I took Bible 104 at Liberty University and this class goes through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The instructor taught us things in this class that you would not normally learn in a normal Sunday school class. We had to write papers on both the old and new testament which encompassed the genre of each book of the bible, the author, the main character or characters, and what the book was about. These two papers were 25% of my grade each and I ended up with a B in this course. I feel that I could do a good job trying to help a student study and learn the things they are having trouble with in this course as I have already taken this course and did well in it.

Special Needs

I have graduated 2 children from special education who had specific learning disabilities. I also am homeschooling our youngest daughter who also has specific learning disabilities. 2 of these children also had ADHD and depression. I tutored the 2 who have already graduated to help them complete their IEP's and they graduated on the A-B honor roll. I have always told my children that when other kids picked on them or made fun of them for being in special classes, they were not to ever feel bad about this. They were to automatically think about it this way, they are in special classes because they are special people. Nobody else qualifies to be in these classes. The only reason they are special enough to be in the classes is because they have a very unique way of learning and when they figure out exactly what that way is, they are to take that and run with it. See, special kids can be anything they set their heads to be ......they just have to set that goal and reach for it. It's up to people like us to get those special kids to see this.

Cooking

Cooking

I took home economics in high school, I took Nutrition in college when I was in nursing school, and then I started raising a family when I was 24. I started learning to cook when I was 16 and was one of 7 children. I have been cooking ever since and am now 50. One of my hobbies is collecting cook books and trying new recipes to see how well they go over on my family. Sometimes, new recipes become family favorites. But, before you can learn about cooking, you have to know how to measure. I am experienced and tend to know just how to measure by taking short cuts, but this is never a good idea when you are learning how to cook. You have to know all of your utensils and what they are for, you need to know what the knobs on the stove are for and use them, you need to know your spices and what they are for, and what you can use for substitutions. These things together can make one into a wonderful cook when used in combination with common sense.
