I hold a TESOL Certificate from Portland State University. I specialize in speaking and conversation. I tutor people of all ages and skills. In addition I am a Certified Barton Reading and Spelling Systems tutor.

One of my first tutoring job was with an adult who needed help in study skills, typing papers, computer skills, memorization methods, Human Biology, and chart making skills just to name a few.

I have been tutoring through WyzAnt for over 8 years specializing in pronunciation and conversation. I taught pronunciation/conversation English at an English Language School in Korea. I volunteered as a pronunciation tutor at Clark College in Vancouver WA. I enjoy teaching and seeing the ah ha moment in the eyes of a student when they finally understand. I help students understand the differences between sounds and the correct technique to make these sounds. I have studied other languages however, from my experience one needs to practice these languages in order to maintain proficiency in speaking these languages.

Painting

Three of my oil paintings have won ribbons. I have a BA in Fine Art with an emphasize in studio art. While most of my tutoring has been in ESL or adult learning of various subjects, drawing and painting are in my heart. Art lends itself to specific hands-on learning which requires the knowledge of the materials being used by both the instructor and the student. Exploring various art techniques challenges the student to enjoy the materials. I would also use the local art galleries and museums as a means to learn from the masters.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

While teaching ESL pronunciation/conversation I also teach vocabulary. I feel that having a good command of vocabulary words allows a student to feel more comfortable in speaking. Vocabulary building allows a person to not only practice the skills such as speaking/listening and reading/writing, but it also allows a person the ability to master the language at a more advanced level. This is my goal as I teach and/or tutor.

Knowledgeable and patient mentor

Verna has been working on my grammar, pronounciation, vocabulary and my reading skills. She is very knowledgeable. Just only about 4 weeks, since I started her ESL online lesson, I have already noticed at lot of improvement and continues to progress in speaking the language, English. One more thing, with Verna’s teaching techniques, I’m able to apply what I have learned as well as confidently communicate well.

Definitely recommend this tutor!

I am having Verna tutoring for my 21 year old nephew, who is visiting here for 3 weeks from Japan. He was so nervous at the beginning but he immediately felt very comfortable with her. My nephew said that she definitely knows how to teach English for non-native speakers like him. He said that she is a very enthusiastic and fun teacher. He also said that he wished that he had been able to learn English from someone like her when he was much younger... Being a non-native English speaker myself, I understand what he means, and I am happy that he got a teacher like Verna. She is on time and she is always very polite. I definitely recommend her.

Very adaptable pertaining to the needs of her student!

I randomly selected Verna as a tutor for my wife based upon several responses to my request. My wife is Thai and has been in the U.S. for 3 years. She can read and write english however her comprehension of complex sentences and words is deficient. She had limited exposure to the American education system and was now attempting to enter higher education. She had previously taken a college entrance exam and failed, needing 15 correct answers, only being able to successfully answer 8 questions within the limited allowed time frame of 12 minutes. Therefore, I sought out help in the form of a tutor, via Wyzant. Verna had less than two weeks to help my wife successfully pass this entrance test. She meet with her 4 times for a total of about 12 hours. I found that Verna quickly assessed my wife's skills and needs, adapted her teaching style to best utilize my wife's needs and successfully helped her to comprehend and pass the entrance test. So much so, that my wife was able to correctly answer 21 questions within the allotted time frame. I was very happy with her tutor style and the successful results.
