I prefer 90-minute rather than 60-minute sessions as my experience has shown this to be the most effective interval of instruction. However, in specific instances, a 60-minute session too may yield the desired outcome. Rates are negotiable based on frequency, group or individual.

As an English and foreign language educator and a professor in the humanities for nearly thirty years in the United States and abroad, I encourage cross-cultural and interdisciplinary exchanges through a set of practical tools, to first analyze, then comprehend and finally to translate complex ideas into easily understood concepts. Students are thus empowered to advance their cognition and express themselves clearly and concisely. Proficiency in the target language is garnered through analysis, synthesis, comparison, contrast, evaluation and application based on the elements of composition, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics (syntax, semantics, vocabulary).

Art History

As a professor in the Humanities, I teach Art History of all chronological periods of the Western World. Similarly, my tutorials provide a broad synthetic understanding of art history and the cross-pollination of painters and sculptors, composers, choreographers, writers, and architects. While guiding students through the history of art, my tutorials connect historical traditions and practices to techniques through the ages. Didactic instruction is combined with a practical application of the medium when we explore history of art through different time periods and geographic locations. Specific Cultural elements such as religion and philosophy are explored to reveal their impact on the artist’s imagination that yields a specific style. My tutorials deem changing theoretical considerations and world views as the backbone for related research relating theory to artistic expressions as found not only in museums but in the world around us. I came to the field as a studio artist, a painter and later sculptor in glass and ceramics, fascinated by both, the creative mind and process as well as the the pursuit of thorough understanding of technique and aesthetics.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I've served as an English as a Second Language Instructor, Member of the Foreign Language Roundtable in Washington D.C., Director of ESL & Foreign Language Program, and English Professor. My philosophy of teaching reflects my philosophy of learning. As a writer and professor for over twenty years, much of my learning has transpired through a combination of diverse academic training and equally varied life experiences. Having moved from many a community to another on this continent and others, offered a wonderful clash and confluence of languages and cultures that demanded to converge and enter diverse discourse communities. Thus, I am able to not only recognize but also intuit learning problems in the target language and help address them with a customized approach.

A genuine “Hamburger,” I have taught all levels of German from High School to University and Adult Continuing Education, served as a Member of the Foreign Language Roundtable in Washington D.C., Director of Foreign Language Schools, a Coordinator of German Exchange Programs and have been a German Language & Culture Consultant to several multi-national corporations. Having moved from many a community to another on this continent and others, offered a wonderful clash and confluence of languages and cultures that demanded to converge and enter diverse discourse communities. Thus, I am able to not only recognize but also intuit learning problems in the target language and help address them with a customized approach. While my German tutorials are designed to help students acquire the skills and confidence necessary to read, write, converse and listen with understanding, I combine my native language with my training in Foreign Language Acquisition. All four language skills are addressed from this vantage point, i.e. language as an artificial construct and a puzzle. Systematically (grammar) and conceptually (content) we target individually weaker areas reinforced through role play, explanations, board games, music and assignments that help students gain and/or expand their proficiency. This integrated approach yields integrated skills on part of the learner to communicate in a personal, academic or profession-specific setting. In the latter case, the tutorial is customized even further as it focuses on business-specific vocabulary and cultural conduct. Pronunciation patterns specific to the student’s native language are addressed from the perspective of a speech therapist as part of the German language production to offset native accent, melody and sound emulation.
Grammar,

Grammar

To achieve English language proficiency, grammar is the backbone. My grammar tutorials range from beginning to intermediate and advanced levels for international students, professionals, and spouses. They provide a structured foundation for basic skills, further learning and fine-tuning. Custom-designed to meet your specific needs, my grammar tutorials provide a series of language arts classes in an alternative educational setting to improve your knowledge and application of the English language.

Proofreading

As an English and Foreign Language Professor, I possess a working knowledge of English, German, Swedish and French. I am familiar with various US as well as international formatting writing standards. It goes without saying that the proper use of punctuation as well as symbols in those respective languages is part of my proficiency. As editor and proofreader of a large pre-press company, many book reviews, scholarly as well as popular articles and manuscripts by other authors and myself, I have had the opportunity to work within the individual guidelines of various publishers including layout and printing conventions. Research for cross-referencing has proven to be essential and those skills can be found in my tutorial tool box which is loaded with my experience of several decades. Learning to recognize and appreciate the voice of an author requires understanding its peculiarities while advertisements usually seek grammatical and lexical correctness indicated by standard editorial marks that are easily understood and keyed.

Reading,

Reading

While I serve as a Speed Reading Coach in the arena of Adult and Continuing Education, it is not always true that Reading Faster is more Efficient! Letters, words, entire sentences on the page have to translate into meaning, so the primary goal is to read for comprehension and only the secondary goal is to reduce the time in doing so. Through key recognition exercises, scanning strategies, and mental fill-in-the-blanks practice, my students learn to spend less time reading but learning more, which means increasing memory and comprehension. While learning to read faster certainly helps, a big part of it is reading less. Reading Critically and with Focus! The degree of content comprehension is usually a reflection of the degree of focus on the main idea of the passage. To discern that focus, you will practice a mind shift in thinking when weighing the answers to respective text-specific questions and other prompts.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary expansion is a continual endeavor for both, native as well as non-native speakers, in business, for tests, for pleasure, as a speaker/presenter and a writer. I know so from my foreign language studies, spelling bees, and as a poet and speech writer in different professional fields with industry-specific vocabularies. In my tutorials, we practice the advice, I leave my students with in the English Department: 1) Use a dictionary. It requires discipline to take the time to look up words and to learn how to spell and pronounce them, but it is the best way to expand your vocabulary. 2) Use a thesaurus. You achieve word variety instead of sounding repetitive. 3) Read. There is no substitute. 4) Choose your company wisely: If you socialize exclusively with people who have a limited vocabulary, yours will not grow either. 5) Be systematic and learn one new word a day, maintain a list, and review your list weekly, monthly.

Literature,

Literature

My English Tutorials engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature and include strategies regarding the close reading of texts, to understand a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as composition elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. It is important to distinguish among the different kinds of writing since they require different response sklll sets. Therefore, unless otherwise differently specified by the client, various genres and periods, are read deliberately and thoroughly, taking time to understand a work's complexity, to absorb its richness of meaning, and to analyze how that meaning is embodied in literary form. In addition to considering a work's literary artistry, students learn to consider the social, cultural and historical values it reflects. A “tool kit” for interpretation focuses on the weaknesses of each student that are established during a thorough skill assessment. Specifically, a) writing to understand a literary work involves writing response and reaction papers along with annotation, free-writing, and keeping some form of a reading journal; b) writing to explain a literary work involves analysis and interpretation, and includes writing brief focused analyses on aspects of language and structure. c) writing to evaluate a literary work involves making and explaining judgments about its artistry and exploring its underlying social and cultural values through analysis, interpretation, and argument. My tutorials emphasize expository, analytical, and argumentative essays while well-constructed creative writing assignments help students see from the inside how literature is written. The goal of both types of writing is to increase the student’s ability to explain clearly, cogently, even elegantly, what s/he understands about literary works and how to interpret each. My writing instruction focuses on developing and organizing ideas in clear, coherent, and persuasive language; a study of the elements of style; atte

I offer both, Tutorials in AP Literature as well as European History. We will reflect on strategies as well as content related considerations pertaining to multiple-choice sections designed to measure the student’s knowledge of European history from the High Renaissance to the present. Helpful red threads will be established to mark the time line and blue threads to mark major political shifts while green ones mark main societal breakthroughs. Examining their intersections will reveal the connectivity between events and human development. Topical emphasis will be determined by the student’s strengths and weaknesses – however, overall emphasis lies on the period from 1450 to the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era to the present while nineteenth century and the twentieth century thought highlights cultural and intellectual, political and diplomatic, and social and economic themes. We will practice free-response with readings followed by respective essay questions and review various systematic approaches to answering thematic questions including planning, outlining, writing (content choices and focus) and reviewing (grammar and mechanics) essays. Reading strategies too are part of the tutorial for without cognitive understanding of the material provided, answers cannot reveal an adequate response. Textual analysis, speed and focus are reinforced through grouping exercises whether they are thematic, chronological or periodic. Most importantly though, my tutorial uses images to reinforce understanding and retention. (also: review my SAT test taking strategies on this site). More advanced students will learn how to navigate research through the time periods and come to understand the various theories behind comparative studies in the humanities, i.e. the history of ideas and its manifestations in European Cultures, from Art, Music and Architecture in the Early Middle Ages and reciprocal influences across the European continent to its global echoes in today's economy, ecology, and creative minds, - pitting

Reading,
