I have worked as a columnist for major news publications, and I taught essay-writing and literature at UNC. I have taught upper-level writing classes and workshops at other universities. I am also a judge of a literary contest.

I can help you produce polished original writing in your own voice that you will be proud to submit. I can show you how to craft exceptionally compelling and original college essays and personal statements. My students have gained admission to Amherst, Barnard, Boston College, Boston University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Fordham, Georgetown, NYU, Oxford, Princeton, Rice, St. Andrew's (Scotland), Tufts, U-Chicago, UNC, U-Penn, USC, Williams College, and Yale. My students always tell me they get nice comments on their essays and that their essays and personal statements were cited in their interviews.

As part of college prep, I can help you achieve a high score on the digital SAT verbal portion (Reading and Writing). In tutoring SAT English, I focus not only on strategies but teach the underlying concepts the students are being tested on. I explain the concept behind each question thoroughly. I will make sure you understand each question and what exactly is being asked. I also will point out the recurring question types. I can also help with the PSAT and help you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. My students are winners!

Emilia, 13 lessons with Olya

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Olya is indeed an experienced and knowledgeable teacher! She began review for the digital reading and writing portion of the SAT with my son Terrence. The first thing she did during the first lesson was going over an actual test, so Terrence can see the structure and question types. She also discussed the questions together and emphasized any points that were not clear. She wanted to make sure Terrence understood the answers and reasons for the correct answers. Most importantly, she emphasized new vocabulary and grammar points. It was a great pleasure to work with Olya and we will continue to schedule more sessions with her.

Honest, empathetic, effective tutor.

Olya has helped my son prepare for the English section of the SAT. She recognized his strengths and used them as she guided him in how to think when presented with unfamiliar materials or concepts. She was honest about challenging areas in a caring, non-judgmental way, and created an environment in which my son was encouraged to strive to do his best. From her feedback to me, which wasn't limited to just SAT topics, it was evident where my son's confidence to tackle the English section of the SAT was rooted. I am very grateful, and will turn to Olya's help when my younger child starts preparing for the SAT!

Wonderful Results!

Olya taught me how to excel in my college nonfiction writing class. Olya is very knowledgeable about writing, and she showed me how to quickly edit my writing and how to make it flow. I learned how to focus the paper on the big issue and how to organize it. I also learned the fine points of grammar and where to put my details. Olya is very motivating, and she cared about me both as a person and as a student. I recommend her to anybody who wants to really improve their writing.
