I have been tutoring for over 20 years, both in an academic setting and privately at in students' homes and at my home. I enjoy working individually with students because I can see an ongoing increase in their understanding of and proficiency in a particular subject. Initially I assess a student's learning style, strong points, and weak points, and from there I determine the best way to approach any subject that the student wishes to focus on. It's a wonderful feeling for both the students...

It's a wonderful feeling for both the students and me when the "light goes on" and they have a better understanding of a language concept that had been puzzling them. Many students and their parents have referred me to other students. Also, upon graduation from University of Massachusetts Boston, where I tutored English, ESL, history, and German, I was presented with the Tutor of the Year Award. This distinction came as a total, but pleasant, surprise to me.

In addition to tutoring, I also teach English as a Second Language - ESL, Basic English, First Year English Literature and Composition, Public Speaking, and other literature classes at a small college in Boston. During the summer I teach ESL to high school students who come to the Boston area to improve their English skills and enjoy the summer in this area. My skills in all levels of English, including grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing are well-developed and constantly being strengthened and reinforced. Therefore, I can pass on my knowledge to my students and be more helpful to them in all aspects of English. I have also taught English as a Second Language to both adults and international students.

Personally, I love reading, traveling, theater, art, music, film, and animals. When I tutor, I find out the student's interests and relate them to what he or she is working with. I hope all of this information has been helpful. I'm sure that you will be pleased with my tutoring skills.

Grammar,

Grammar

As a college English instructor, I specialize in both Basic English and First Year English Composition. Both of these classes stress the fact that proper grammar is a vital component of all aspects of English writing. In my classes I focus on the grammar topics that present the most obvious problem, such as noun/verb/pronoun agreement, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments. Then I see what other problems seem to be evident in my students' writing assignments, or what problems seem to be troubling them the most. When I tutor, I focus on the individual student's grammar issues and work closely with the student to explain and clarify those issues.

Terrific Tutor

Lessons with Ellen were very productive and gave my son a better understanding of math and English concepts that will be part of the ISEE test. The tutoring sessions put my son at ease and gave him confidence to take the exam. Ellen is very kind, organized and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend her for a tutor.

Outstanding expert teacher on Reading/writing

I have been looking for an expert teacher on reading comprehension/writing for my daughter for a while after she was engaged for a few years in a different program that helped her to some extent, bu we need more specific and individual tailored help for my daughter, so recently I found WyzAnt and there are huge resource to find great tutors. After reading and comparing different teachers expertise, I contacted Ellen and she was very enthusiastic to help my daughter. Based on these two classes teaching (two weeks, each on Sunday), I can tell from my experience and knowledge, Ellen has vast talent and is a true expert teacher on reading and writing. She is able to quickly assess a student's weakness and gear her teaching to more specifically to benefit the student. There are a few things I am very impressed by Ellen: first, when she is going through the article with my daughter, she would ask many questions from different angle and that are relevant to the sentence to stimulate the student into active thinking to help better understand the sentence and help to enforce the memory; second, she would also explain some of the historical background or common knowledge around certain vocabulary/sentence, or used some visual guide to help the student to catch the idea clearly and efficiently; and finally most importantly, Ellen is very patient and would use different techniques to guide the student to come to the understanding of the words, sentence and articles. In brief, Ellen is a great tutor/teacher in that she has the substantial/huge talent/experience, and she knows how to use different techniques to help the student more efficiently, and she is very enthusiastic/responsible to her tutoring and helping the kids.

The grades are heading North

Thank you for your patience and tailoring sessions to my son's needs. I am very excited about his growing vocabulary, ability to communicate on the topic AND grades he began to bring home. He tells me after each session, that lesson helped him.

Hello Kit, Thank you very much for your feedback. It will be a great reference for other potential students and their parents. I'm glad you are pleased with the work we have been doing together. Sincerely, Ellen

Great tutor!

Ellen S. helped me to get prepared for the TOEFL test in only 9 weeks. We met once a week on a day which pleased us the best. My day plan is very busy, so I was very thankful that Ellen always tried to squeeze 1.5 h in her day plan! As a tutor Ellen was always very friendly, calm and patient! In our 1.5 hours we did many exercises together. We corrected my homework and talked a lot about important things I had to pay attention to! I really appreciate her effort and enjoyed our meetings a lot! I'm glad I have chosen her as my tutor and in the end I even passed my TOEFl! Thank you very much Ellen!

Enjoyable and great educational courses

These lessons with Ellen are the perfect fit for me. Currently, we work with texts and this method totally meets my expectations in the sense that I learn a lot of vocabulary & I can improve my pronunciation by reading out loud, so in the end I will speak more fluently English. An extra advantage with these individual tutor lessons, is that Ellen and I can talk and discuss about what recently happened on the news or other typical things and habits in the USA which are different in my country. In that way I definitely learn a lot with Ellens' teaching method.
