Hi, I'm Steve. I have spent the past 25 years as a programmer in industry. I have programmed in Java, JavaScript, Python, and SQL and delivered many programs, websites, and databases to production during my career. Over the past 15 years, I have spent a good portion of my time mentoring junior developers, doing code reviews, and assisting peers in delivering quality code. If you want someone with experience in doing it in the real world, I have that in spades. Programming is not only my profession but also my passion. I do game development on the side, and I know a lot of students come into programming with the idea of building the games they play.
I graduated college some years ago with bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics. During my junior and senior years of college, I was a tutor, assisting junior classmates in Java, C, and C++.
I have spent the past couple of years tutoring college students at a local community college where we worked on Java and JavaScript.
My approach to tutoring is to ask probing questions and get the student to arrive at the answers themselves. Programming is, at its core, the art of solving problems. To that point, programming is as much an art as a science, and every student will have their own way of solving problems. I hope that every student I tutor will leave with the skill and desire, even a joy, to become a professional developer themselves. I like learning experiences to be easy going and relaxed.
I am easy to communicate with and welcome any suggestions or resources on how to make the content more relevant and impactful to the student.
