Bio

I graduated with honors from Wesleyan University with a degree in history. I graduated magna cum laude from Tulane Law School and received my Master's in Social Work from Tulane as well. I work as a public defender and love working as a lawyer, but I have always missed academia and teaching ever since I first taught English as a second language in Mexico. Tutoring is a great way to continue to work with students and allows me to stay in touch with the world of education and learning.

I have always felt that education was the greatest gift I have received in my life. I profoundly enjoyed college and graduate school and received invaluable help from professors who were able to facilitate my own drive to learn and allowed me to study in my own learning style. I believe that students are best helped by teachers and tutors who respect different and unique ways of learning and are able to respond to a variety of student needs. As a tutor I take the approach that everyone's learning needs are different and it is important to address the individual nature of each student. When I taught English as a second language, I taught a wide range of ages, including young children, but also led a class for literacy-challenged adults. Teaching a second language to people who were not able to read taught me the importance of starting where each student is, not where I or someone else believes they "should" be. I foster a non-judgmental learning environment and I strive to make each student feel capable and confident. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, or to schedule a lesson!

I learned Spanish by moving to Mexico when I was young, through immersion. I subsequently studied Spanish literature in college to perfect my grasp of written and academic Spanish. In my work as a lawyer, I represent many Spanish-speaking clients and often do translation work for them.
