I hold a Master's degree in teaching, Highly Qualified designation, currently active. My professional teaching background includes 16 years of classroom teaching experience at the elementary and middle school grade levels.I have taught all core subjects (ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science). In addition, I have taught undergraduate and graduate level education major students as an adjunct professor at both Baker University and Saint Mary University. I have conducted numerous workshops for teachers and pre-service teachers.
As a published author and illustrator of a children's book, Ralphina, the Roly-Poly, I have presented numerous writing/illustrating workshops in public libraries, schools, community venues, and book stores. Being a professional artist specializing in pet portraiture, traditional landscapes, and wildlife provides a unique vision as I plan lessons - the creative juices kick in, and fabulous products are produced that demonstrate learning!
My approach to teaching is to design lessons that are fun and creative for your child while supporting the district curriculum as set forth by the classroom teacher. Along with the teacher's formal assessments, I will monitor student progress throughout the school year, which will be communicated to you consistently through verbal updates, anecdotal notes, and informal assessments.
My goal for every child is to learn to love learning - for their lifetime! It is as John Dewey once said, "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."
I look anxiously forward to meeting you and your child/children! My passion for teaching anxiously awaits for the opportunity to inspire my future students!

Grammar

Grammar

Grammar at the elementary level can seem an isolated and often confusing skill to learn. If presented as a separate and isolated subject, it can be elusive. One method I incorporate for students to truly learn grammar is to have them listen - really listen, in a meaningful way, to the correct way of reading and seeing how our language should sound. I approach grammar as it is in text - in wonderful stories that students love. Through listening to text being read aloud, as well as reading text aloud themselves, students actually hear and see how correct grammar looks and sounds. The more exposure they get through reading, and through studying examples of correct versus incorrect grammar, the more they find it uncomfortable to listen to when the writing not well scripted.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold Master of Arts degree in Education, (Highly Qualified designation), certified in grades K-9. I have more than 10 years' classroom instruction experience, and currently am a professor at Baker University as an instructor of pre-service teachers. In other words, I teach teachers how to teach. Fun!
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Math is a definite favorite subject for me to teach. I create interesting and effective methods to help students grasp mathematical concepts. Manipulatives are one method of presentation that helps students 'visualize' abstract concepts that may be difficult to comprehend in the more often implemented pencil-and-paper method. Relating mathematical concepts to real life is highly instrumental in understanding all areas of this subject. Math CAN be FUN!
Elementary Science,

Elementary Science

For me, Science is perhaps the most fascinating of the subject areas in elementary education to teach. I create interesting and effective methods to help students grasp how science is part of everything related to our lives - from the most minute particle to the vast universe we live in. Taking a walk outside presents opportunities to experience science in a myriad of ways - from observing nature, to seeing the effects that human beings have on our environment, to gazing at the stars and imagining what our futures may hold. I SHOW students how they so magnificently fit into this vastness, and that they have the power to make a difference. The study of science is one way for students to be awakened to their amazing potential.

Phonics,

Phonics

Good phonics instruction involves thorough knowledge of letters, spelling patterns, and words, all of which are crucial to the development of skillful reading. I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and I teach phonics using several methods. One method involves planned skills taught within the context of authentic literature. Another method is to decode new words by retrieving from memory the sound that each letter, or combination of letters, in a word represents and blending the sounds into a recognizable word. The key here is that phonic instruction is not presented in isolation, but within the context of authentic text that is meaningful to the learner.
Reading,

Reading

Journey to any real or fantastical location imaginable. Discover history and its effects on how humankind lives today. Listen to the sing-song rhythm of a Dr. Seuss poem and there will be foot-tapping to accompany his words. Cry with characters as they experience joyful or heartbreaking experiences. Celebrate still with other characters as they defeat obstacles in their lives and prevail with incredible success. READING: it opens worlds upon worlds of possibilities through the written words of talented authors and amazing illustrators. Reading is the crux of all other subject areas. When a student learns all there is to love about reading, success in other areas increases exponentially.
Spelling,

Spelling

Spelling must be taught in conjunction with writing and reading. A student will remember how to spell a word when that word has meaning. Simply regurgitating the correct spelling of a word on a test will seldom translate to spelling correctly in other contexts. I immerse students in literature, in responding to literate via writing, and incorporate a variety of instruction methods to suit your child's learning style.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Poor academic performance may not be an indication of a child's level of ability - oftentimes, poor study skills are the culprit. Spending time in front of a book does not translate to effective study skills. I teach note-taking and test-taking strategies and study skills that will translate to effective studying behaviors and, in turn, higher academic performance. Ultimately, a happy child who will be proud to share their grades with you! I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Limited vocabularies prevent students from comprehending text. When comprehension becomes difficult, students choose to read less. Reading less only exacerbates the problem. My approach is to foster their development of a large “word bank” and effective vocabulary learning strategies through repetitive word exposure in a variety of contexts. I explore different strategies and techniques to find what works best for each student. A large vocabulary will increase comprehension substantially. More reading occurs because it has become enjoyable rather than being a frustration!

Incredible Teacher!

Claudia C. is incredible! My daughter was struggling so much with her self esteem because she wasn't understanding math as it was being taught. Mrs. C. determined how my daughter was learning and adjusted the teaching! I am now amazed at the confidence and understanding that my daughter has! She is wanting to learn more! She is asking all the right questions! She has already gone from a D in her math class to a B!!! Mrs. C. is patient, but firm! She keeps very open communication with the parents and encourages a dialogue with the actual math teacher as well. Best decision we could have made. My daughter even drew herself as a Math Teacher in the future for her art class! She said "I want to help others realize that math can be fun and not so bad, like Mrs. C. helped me". Thank you Mrs. C. You are wonderful!

Awesome Tutor

I feel blessed to have found Claudia. My child has immediately responded to her and wants to impress her, which certainly helps to achieve the improvements we need. She is the master of reading and was quickly able to access his needs and get him on a plan that is right for him. I found him reading by flashlight the other night...something, I can say, I thought I would never find. Thank you Claudia!!!

Claudia is outstanding!

How did we get so lucky? Claudia is outstanding! Claudia's experience and background in education are impressive and she is passionate about teaching and learning. She is also a complete delight! She is outgoing, warm, enthusiastic and fun! Our son looks forward to every session with her. Claudia is currently working with my son to improve his 2nd grade reading skills. She does a great job keeping him open and interested in learning and has created an individualized plan based on his current abilities and skills gaps. She has quickly assessed how he learns best and has come up with fun ways to reward and recognize his progress. He is very motivated to learn and is proud of his progress. We could not be happier.
