My favorite subjects, in no particular order, are music, science (particularly physics, chemistry, and the medical sciences), and math.

-Science and math: I have over five years of experience as an online physics and algebra tutor, mostly working with high school, and college students but some military personnel as well. When tutoring physics, my philosophy is that conceptual understanding comes before a formula, not the other way around! This is important because you can't expect to do...

-Science and math: I have over five years of experience as an online physics and algebra tutor, mostly working with high school, and college students but some military personnel as well. When tutoring physics, my philosophy is that conceptual understanding comes before a formula, not the other way around! This is important because you can't expect to do well in a physics class by simply memorizing the equations in your textbook and then trying to guess which ones you're supposed to use on a given problem. I focus on explaining the concepts and principles involved so that you don't have to do as much rote memorization, and so that when you do have to memorize something, it makes so much sense that you're sure to remember it!

I have also attended the Oregon Institute of Technology, taking prerequisite courses toward their Medical Lab Science program, so I have studied human anatomy and physiology, inorganic and organic chemistry, medical microbiology, and immunology at the 300- and 400-levels as well.

-Music: I have had a number of piano students, and I would love to have more! I majored in music at Southwestern Oregon Community College, where I studied piano performance, music theory, aural skills (a.k.a. ear training and sight-singing), and music history. I also participated in several music ensembles, including the college's symphonic choir and early-music ensemble.

Whether you're working your way through high school, studying for a college degree, or just learning for personal enrichment, I would love to help you achieve

Homeschool

I was homeschooled myself, and understand the needs and concerns of homeschooling parents and their children. I have assisted in the education of my younger siblings not only at the elementary-school level, but also through high school and beyond (I even helped my younger brother prepare for the MCAT and edit his med school applications, and he has now been accepted to at least one school with more possibly on the way). I have also helped teach my younger sister algebra, and for some time provided the geography component of her social studies education. I've known many homeschooling parents who were unsure whether and how to proceed as their children left the elementary school years and entered junior high and high school material. I would especially enjoy helping homeschooling parents and their children with junior high and high school-level subjects in which they feel they need some extra assistance!

History

Music History,

Music History

During my time as a college music major, I took a year-long music history class, and wrote roughly 30 pages' worth of research papers on related topics. In addition, I have studied piano for many years, both with instructors and on my own, and learned much about the history of Western classical music through that. I would enjoy helping students to learn about this fascinating subject!

Piano,

Piano

I've been playing piano for about 12-15 years, and spent two years as a college music major. I have studied and performed works from all four periods of classical music, as well as contemporary popular music and some ragtime. I am open to using a variety of piano methods for beginning instruction, and for more advanced students my approach to teaching a historically-informed interpretation of each period and style of piano literature includes awareness of music that was written for other instruments and ensembles in the same timeframe. I can teach piano lessons via the Internet using Zoom or other similar means.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I have two years of experience in this area. My qualifications for teaching ear training are similar to my qualifications for teaching sight singing, because I learned them concurrently as part of the same aural skills class. They are closely-related skills, and my approach to teaching them would be quite similar (mostly laying a sound foundation of scale-degree recognition, coupled with rhythmic training, and building on that).
General Music,

General Music

I have played piano for about 12-15 years, and have studied all music-related topics on some level. I have particularly spent time on piano performance, music history, music theory, and aural skills. I also compose some of my own music, although I have not formally studied music composition. I am currently developing further in this area by undertaking a study of orchestration. I enjoy introducing people of all ages and ability levels to the wonders of music!

Music Theory,

Music Theory

I majored in music for two years, and got straight A's in music theory during that time. I can help with many areas of music theory, from the spelling of basic chords and scales through the principles of part writing, functional harmony, and even twelve-tone music.

Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I took two years of ear training/sight singing classes in college, and to this day practice the skill of sight singing regularly. To pass on this skill, I would focus mainly on solfege scale-degree recognition, as I believe that interval memorization is a less efficient way to learn, and is only necessary for sight-singing atonal pitch sequences. Because most sight-singing students will sing predominantly tonal music, I focus on pitch recognition within a tonal context.

Chess

I have played chess for many years, but started taking it seriously about 8-9 years ago. Since then, I have enjoyed playing chess both online and at local tournaments organized by a school chess club that regularly produces state-championship contenders (and lately even a National Master and a Candidate Master!). I am also a chess fan, and regularly follow world-class competitions. I have coached a small, relatively new school chess club and also taught a semester-long chess class at a homeschool co-op, both of which I would love to have the opportunity to do again. I am not a titled master, but if you're looking to learn the basic or intermediate concepts of the game (including both tactics and strategies), I would love to teach you!

Wonderful Tutor

Philip is very patient, problem-oriented, and also very you-oriented. To me, the biggest thing was him asking me questions to get my mind to figure the concepts or problems out. If I needed help he would give me hints. Another thing was his understanding of problems or concepts of what I would be confused on, which let him speak more in my language. I recommend him for anyone needing an understanding of concepts from a basic level, to applying them on more advanced ones.

It was such a breeze scheduling and getting the lesson completed. My son really understood his teaching method and was able to do well on his exam. He did a great job walking him through same problems to make sure he truly understand the material.
