You may think you're a student who needs academic support, but you're not! You're also a human being with your own unique personality, style, learning preferences, fears, challenges hopes, dreams and goals. This is the philosophy I've founded my teaching upon for my 10+ years of experience. I've taught most recently at an Upper West Side private school with a specialty working with students with learning "dis"abilities like ADD/ADHD, autism/social spectrum disorders and anxiety/depression. I've honed my skills of one-on-one coaching to include a focus on executive functioning, time management and strategies to succeed, specially tailored toward each student's holistic needs and profile.

I hold degrees from UC Berkeley and Harvard, and since then, in my years of tutoring, teaching and coaching, I have focused on numerous areas of expertise, including SAT (I scored 99+ percentile), ACT, English (my undergraduate degree + honors), Writing (from 7+1 Traits up through college-level analysis), Math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus), Spanish (I'm fluent), ESL / TOEFL, Physics and Study Skills. I also specialize in AP Calculus BC, AP English Literature, AP Psychology, AP Economics and AP Biology, having scored a perfect 5 on each of those tests.

As a writing tutor at UC Berkeley's Student Learning Center for several years, I helped hundreds of Cal students not only meet their academic goals, but also become better writers and more perceptive thinkers. I treat tutees as human beings and never underestimate the value of a true one-on-one relationship. As a Senior Tutor, I helped oversee the program's tutoring methodologies and worked with new tutors to explore the very dynamic of holistic and dialectical processes.

I've been writing and publishing all my life, so my specialties include all forms of writing: persuasive or expository essays, fiction, scientific or business writing, proofreading & editing, press &

Ballroom Dancing

My mother is a ballroom dance instructor and taught me since I was young. I finally picked up the initiative and joined the UC Berkeley ballroom dance team, certified through USABDA (USA Dance, Inc.), the official national DanceSport organization, and competed in the silver level in Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, Cha-Cha, Rhumba, Samba and Jive. I placed in finals for numerous dances at competitions such as the prestigious Harvard and Stanford Invitationals. I also have experience with social dances such as salsa, swing, two-step, merengue and hustle! I can also teach simple dance steps for any event, such as weddings or dance functions.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

Having English as a first language but a family that comes from a foreign culture, I have found teaching ESL/ESOL to be of particular interest. At the Student Learning Center, I studied and discussed educational methodologies that include pedagogical strategies for foreign cultures and for students with different backgrounds and learning styles. I have experience working with students on English as a second language in such settings as pre-college, UC Berkeley and Boston University. No matter the student's history or experience level, I'm here to help!

Study Skills

Having gone through rigorous courses of study at UC Berkeley and Harvard, I have a lot to bring to the table when it comes to strategies for success! I went to a top school in the state and my college application was very intense - I dealt with a lot of stress and learned a lot of lessons the hard way, while managing to score a "5" on over six AP exams. Subsequently, I managed an academic course load with a double-major at Berkeley while engaging in sports, music, theatre, writing, filmmaking and a career - and through that experience I developed immense organizational capacity, ounce by ounce. I was able to graduate with Honors and a spot on the Dean's List, as well as multiple awards (including the highest) from my department. I like to think of life from a stage manager's point of view: measure your time accordingly, prepare step-by-step, and make sure to make real human relationships with coworkers, colleagues, friends, family and most importantly, yourself! My methods include a case-by-case analysis of each and every human being - not just charts and graphs, but philosophies that help establish and maintain true habits.

English

English

Through my experience as a tutor, writer and mentor, I feel that I can bring a unique and fulfilling energy to the process of anyone engaging with any aspect of English, whether it be writing, reading & comprehension, SAT skills, grammar or English as a second language. I've tutored for several years at the Student Learning Center at the University of California, Berkeley, where I spent my final year as a Senior Tutor, advising new tutors and developing pedagogical strategies. With organized and freelance tutoring experience, a 5 on the English Literature AP Exam, and numerous writing credits, I hope I can bring my passion for all facets of English to others, and help them truly understand the beauty of this language and its structure.

Writing,

Writing

As a lifelong writer, I can walk the walk. I've had plays produced by UC Berkeley and the American Conservatory Theater, as well as a children's musical with Ariel Dance Productions. My prose and poetry are published in international literary magazines (Aquillrelle, University of Cambridge) and local ones (Stanford Anthology for Youth). I've written screenplays produced at Campus Movie Fest, and was a top finalist for the Emmys Foundation internship. I've studied with top-notch published authors (Melanie Abrams, Emma Sweeney, Georgina Kleege), New York Times writers (John Shoptaw) and Poets Laureate (Robert Hass). I worked with Robert Hass to adapt his poetry collection "Time and Materials" onto the stage for my senior thesis project. My academic writing & comprehension skills are good counterpoints to my creative skills, including a "5" on the AP English Literature exam and a 780 in the SAT Writing section. Through my English degree at Berkeley, I perfected the art of the essay, analytic and persuasive. And through my experience tutoring freelance and at Cal's Student Learning Center, I've developed methods and strategies to really engage students with my thirst for writing. My goal is to help you not only improve any writing skill (be it creative, academic or vocational), but also to give you the tools you need to turn writing into a masterful good time, rather than a chore. When you write with passion, you can unlock opportunities you never thought possible!

Piano,

Piano

I have studied and loved piano for most of my life. I trained classically with the Music Teachers' Association of California's Certificate of Merit program for ten years, during which my repertoire, ear training, theory, sight reading, rhythm, music history, stylistic expertise, composition and technical skills were tested each year. I graduated from the program at the Advanced level, and ranked well in the prestigious Panel competition in front of certified judges. I also graduated at the National Level from the National Guild of Piano Players, which required repertoire performances for judges each year. My repertoire includes Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary music, as well as pop, rock and jazz. My specialties are Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, Copland and Gershwin, but I love picking up anything! In addition to my classical training, I play musical theatre songs and I'm an experienced accompanist, audition pianist and music coach. I'd love to teach students of any age and any experience level! For young students I use Bastien and Alfred, among others, as well as Basics of Keyboard Theory for intermediate students. I believe a true passion and understanding for music is just as important as technical proficiency or muscle memory. Piano can take us to new worlds!
