Hello, everyone! I have taught college and am ready to be your high school or college tutor in History (American, European, Ancient), Government (American and comparative), English literature, grammar, composition, test prep (SAT/PSAT, ACT, GED, GRE), as well as Latin, Italian, French, and Classical Greek.

I have tutored many students who have been challenged by difficult or unfamiliar material. I empathize with the struggling learner, but I am also determined to help him or her form effective study techniques to leap over those obstacles. For your tutoring, I would begin with your particular needs, as you and I see them, and then form a program of exercises to meet those needs.

When approaching a topic, I like to start with the basics and then try to see the big picture. In a passage, I look for the overall intent of the writer and the organization of the writing. For example, the Declaration of Independence is a logical sequence of paragraphs, with paragraphs as sequential sentences, sentences as sequential phrases, phrases as sequential words, and words as sequential syllables (for words that are unfamiliar, a dictionary is our best friend!). Learning is sequential, and so your lessons should be sequential as well. We would first seek a sure grasp of the basics of a topic, then proceed to examine it more closely, gaining knowledge of the precise or more complex aspects of it.

For best results in this process of tutoring and learning, I use a patient and careful method, regularly engaging the student with conversation and questions to prompt him or her to recite and explain the material -- or to return to study it again, if need be. As a teacher, I can attest that a sure sign of grasping a topic is being able to explain it to another!

I look forward to working with you soon!

GRE,

GRE

As a GRE tutor, I can help especially with verbal and analytical reasoning, though I can also assist with quantitative reasoning. As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in identifying and analyzing arguments in great texts of philosophy, politics, and literature, as well as in contemporary essays and opinions. In the course of this instruction, I have tutored students to master English, through precise knowledge of grammar, syntax, sentence structure, diction, and logic.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

In my fourteen-year career teaching college, I spoke before public groups -- i.e., students -- regularly and extensively. My topics ranged from history and current political events to themes in great literature. In presenting these topics, I practiced the fundamentals of public speaking, such as organization, clarity, use of visual aids, voice articulation and projection, composure, confidence, humor, as well as flexibility and attentiveness when answering questions from the audience. In addition to instructing students in regular sessions, I also formally spoke to general audiences in public lectures on timely topics.

Corporate Training

Italian,

Italian

I studied Italian for three years in graduate school, which included both written exercises and translations, and spoken practice. Since then I've kept up with the language by having a pen pal in Milan, by translating Machiavelli and by reading Corriere della Sera online.
Latin,

Latin

I studied Latin intensively for four years (starting in 9th grade) and have kept up with the language through college, graduate school, and in my teaching career by reading classic works, such as Virgil and Ovid, in the original Latin. For new learners, I recommend the fantastic stories of myth and legend and the great history of Rome. These texts are very accessible and provide a great way to learn the structure of Latin and appreciate its expressive power.

As a college teacher, I have instructed hundreds of students in techniques to analyze passages of writing I've assigned. To help them comprehend a passage's meaning, I've taught techniques to identify point of view, evidence, conclusion, as well as structure and sequence of paragraphs, sentences, and clauses. I also teach the lost (and highly useful) art of diagramming sentences.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

As a college teacher, I pay close attention to my students' knowledge of words, particularly as I assign rich and complex documents for them to read and analyze. These texts are challenging, often employing words and phrases that are unfamiliar to the students, but still very important. In assigning the documents, I highlight such words and phrases, and require students to list the meaning of each, using both dictionary definition and context. This approach has been very effective in developing in students a scholarly habit of learning new words. My students have increased their vocabulary and thereby their knowledge and ability to express ideas and opinions.

Intelligent and knowledgeable

Sean is intelligent beyond words and can break new information down in a way that easy to retain. Sean and I continued through the textbook for our 5th session. We completed a review of LSAT reasoning, conditional statements, the conversion to contrapositives, and how to notate and apply them in analyzing and rephrasing typical prompts on the LSAT.
